Ukraine’s Roma refugees recount discrimination en route to safety
Hundreds of Ukraine’s Roma people face an uncertain future in Moldova’s capital Chisinau as many are not documented.

Cristina travelled from Kharkiv to Lviv, then to the Moldovan border. But there, she said, she spent four days in the cold waiting to enter Moldova, without any food or water.

Once they found shelter, she and other Roma were chased out of their tents by the Ukrainian border authorities.

Cristina is one of an estimated 400,000 Ukraine’s Roma people who, besides the trauma of war, have to cope with discrimination along their evacuation route out of Ukraine.

Many have always been undocumented, others lost their papers during the war. All have limited options as to where they can go. But the hardest thing is the break-up of their families, which the Roma culture values more than anything.

At the border, her son was stopped and was drafted to fight for the Ukrainian army.

When Putin identifies Neo-Nazism in Ukraine it's because there is Neo-Nazism in Ukraine.

That’s why I know what I’m going to hear next. I’ll probably be told that I’m part of Putin’s hybrid war (really?), that I work for the Kremlin (um, no), or that I’m doing the Kremlin’s work (also no). But I didn’t invent Ukraine’s far-right, and I certainly haven’t helped them gain the prominence they’ve got heading in 2019.

The problem is real. It’s time for Ukraine to talk about it and take it on.

In the face of the evidence- do you still deny that Ukraine has a neo-Nazi problem. Or don't you consider neo-Nazism to be a problem


I really do appreciate how embarrassing it must be for you- and others- to be confronted by the fact that you've been cheer-leading neo-Nazis - but would you rather continue or change course ?

After WWII they continued to be discriminated against and oppressed, especially in the Soviet Union. Between the 1970s and 1990s, the Czech Republic and Slovakia sterilized around 90,000 Romani women against their will.

Soviet propaganda like this is soooo stale, tell Putin to get some new writers

You won't get many people in Sheffield saying anything good about Roma, especially in the Page Hall area. I used to live in Sheffield so have first hand experience of them, not least because the bastards were stealing catalytic converters from cars, mine included.

Page Hall has a well established immigrant community of Pakistanis and West Indians. The Roma came and destroyed it almost overnight with their nightmarish anti-social behaviour. At one stage the police imposed a 10pm curfew to stop a race war starting between Pakistanis and Roma. Nobody in their right mind would welcome them.

We are Page Hall Residents Action Group consisting of long-term residents living in Page Hall, Grimesthorpe, and Lower Firth Park.


We are writing in response to the article you published by Steve Jones on 23.10.20 [We ventured into Page Hall with the man trying to improve it – here’s what happened next].

We would like to seize this opportunity to advise Sheffield residents as a whole what life is truly like living in these communities, the false propaganda that has been spread and raise the question as to what the multi millions of pounds of tax payer’s money has been spent on.

Regarding current issues, we are grateful to Sheffield Star for publishing articles that reflect the ongoing problems in our communities such as anti-social behaviour, fly-tipping on the streets and rats.

However, we also have to suffer with noise nuisance, accumulation of household waste in gardens and overcrowding of families.

The articles that you have published and our continual statements to government bodies confirms that this is not a racial attack but an actual fact that the

majority of these problems derive from Roma-Slovakia groups.

As long-term residents in these communities we have been trying for over 15 years to express that these problems are having a significant impact on our human rights and our quality of life.
