U.S. Shells Out Aid for Africa as China, Russia Hold Back

The United States is stepping up aid to the drought-stricken Horn of Africa in spite of deep deficit problems, while the countries that have snickered on the sidelines about America's cash crunch, specifically Russia and China, are giving pennies on the dollar to what the U.S. has committed.

The United States has approved $565 million in humanitarian aid for the region so far this year, according to the Obama administration. Included in that is the $105 million announced by the White House Monday.

While Russia and China hold on to their bucks, they're not shy about dispensing financial advice to the United States.

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin was recently quoted saying the United States was "acting as a parasite" by not living within its means and "shifting the weight of responsibility" on others.

After U.S. credit was downgraded by Standard & Poor's Friday, Chinese state media scolded the U.S. and said its "good old days" of massive borrowing are over.

But when it comes to humanitarian aid, the countries are under pressure to do more.

House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi said in a statement last week that other nations need to contribute their share to crises like the one in Africa.

while it does make russia look like an idiot for their comment...should we really be sending so much money at a time like this? morally, it is a good thing to do. however, the US often acts as the world's policeman and santa clause. i wonder if that money was put to use here for improving infrastructure how much it would help. we are spending so much money in iraq, afghanistan and all over the world, how about we invest more in america....

All of the major rating agencies are located in the US, right? Just threaten them with treason, and we will have an AAA rating in perpetuity.

Other countries like the one's in Africa? Seriously here why is it the responsibility of other countries to cover for Africa? It's like one enormous gravity well for relief organizations, charities and cash. Yes it's sad that warlords run most of the countries, its also sad that drug cartels run south america, that people in siberia freeze to death and that the polar bears don't eat as many tourists as they used to. It is not the duty of any country to carry another, I have no problem with people donating to charities, that's their money but I object to my tax dollars being spent to feed the newest rebel uprising in Uganda. The Chinese have rather a right to complain since we're spending money we owe them on relief work that will not change things.

Politicians are drumming up fear there is no crisis, if there were would we be dropping billions around the world like they are cabbie tips? Would we not use our natural resources if we really needed jobs and money?
