U.S. Navy rescues Iranian sailors

(CNN) -- U.S. sailors from a carrier strike group whose recent presence in the Persian Gulf drew the ire of Iranian military officials have rescued 13 of the Middle Eastern country's sailors from a hijacked fishing boat, a military spokesman said Friday.

The destroyer USS Kidd came to the aid of the ship Thursday in the North Arabian sea, near the crucial Strait of Hormuz, according to the Navy.

The rescue prompted the captain of the freed ship to offer his "sincere gratitude," according to Josh Schminky, a Navy Criminal Investigative Service agent aboard the Kidd.

It is decency. I was very proud of our Navy and our government.

While that is strictly true, the headline is misleading.

Until I read the article I thought Iranian naval personnel had been rescued.

sounds about right, but i am a literal type person...

maybe they should have referred to them as seamen

For those unaware of the trivial nuances in naval history, the Kidd was originally built (along with 3 others) as part of the Kidd class of destroyers for the Shah or Iran. However, as we all know the Shah was deposed. So we ended up keeping them. And now what was supposed to be an Iranian ship ends up saving Iranian saliors.
