Weirdly enough, while they lied about who they were, they were born in the USA. They were too old to join the Coast Guard, which may have been why they lied about who they were.

With computer systems being what they are today, even with decades of supporting evidence for their false identity, they were caught. The pictures with them in KGB uniforms, and the massive financial contributions to trump are just bizarre icing on the cake.
