Trump's lie du jour - murder rate "highest it's been in 47 years"

So....it's the highest it's been in 47 years then?
of course not. look at some of the answers of denial here..why I posted the facts, as well as Trump's facts being wrong.

It's looking bad. Baltimore and Chicago are becoming more of the norm

Let's not try and anecdote our way out of this one.

YES !!

Chicago has a serious murder rate problem.

BUT !!

Los Angeles' murder rate has reportedly dropped.

The valid stat, the nation-wide stat, is according to this evening's CBS-TV News, the FBI stats indicate we're near a 57 year low.

So what does this say about Trump? Did he merely mis-speak? Or does he know he's lying?

And what does it mean to have a president that lies to us? President Pence?
"I am not a crook." President & crook RM Nixon

I still just marvel that the entire case against Hillary was "honesty."

Trump will tell more lies in his admin than the last 20 Presidents combined. The man literally cannot stop lying.

And I'll post tomorrow's as soon as he comes out w/ it. We will have a thread like this every day, easily.

I don't know the whole context of what the President was saying, but if he specified 47 years, that's kind of an offbeat number of years to cite isn't it?

He must have had some hard stats he was referencing which obviously didn't include the entire country.

what "anecdotal" - READ the link I posted "the 30 largest U.S. cities saw a double-digit increase in their murder rate in 2016" - it's not anecdotal at all

Nope.

Yep, there should be a sticky thread like the "what song are you listening to? thread and we could have a running total of all his lies.

That's a great idea! I was trying to think of a good way to do it (ideas included just going numerical, like Lie #27, Lie # 28, etc., or dating each "lie" thread)

There are three types of lies: Lies, damn lies, and statistics.

Anyway, I think he's taking anecdotal evidence and contriving a percentage out of thin air. I don't think that the FBI has 2016 reports ready yet and projected numbers don't count.

So....it's the highest it's been in 47 years then?

the difference between liberals and us is that you take everything Trump says literally, and we take your insanity literally......perhaps you can find that other group of liberals who share half a brain and put your heads together......

Sure thing. Murders are up in Chicago - so that means the murder rate nationally is the highest it's been in 47 years.

That's about par for the course for rightie math.

ooooooh, you thought it was maaath.......we thought it was politics.......we win......we won.....

murder rates are going up in many cities. and going up big ( besides the obvious Chicago which is more deadly then Kabul or Baghdad)

Murders Up in U.S. Cities
http://time.com/4607059/murder-rate-increase-us-cities-2016/
The 30 largest U.S. cities saw a double-digit increase in their murder rate in 2016, according to a new year-end report, even as crime nationwide remains near all-time lows.

A new study released Tuesday by New York University’s Brennan Center for Justice projects that the 2016 murder rate for the largest U.S. cities is up 14% from 2015 while the violent crime rate rose by 3.3%. The overall crime rate, however, increased by just 0.3%, thanks in large part to historically low levels of property crime, according to the study's authors.

No.
It's simple arithmetic.
If at 48 it wouldn't be true, dial it back until it is. That magic number was 47, in the mind of the liar that told it.

a) I don't have the exact wording of Trump's comment. If you'll post it, I'll critique it.

b) If Trump was talking about Chicago, then I concede your point.

If you disagree your squabble is not with me. I'm the messenger. Your squabble with CBS, and the FBI stats they reported.

" - it's not anecdotal at all" a #27

Statistically it might as well be.
If the cum was near a 57 year low, whatever the increase might have been in the cities you're cherry-picking
would have been more than compensated for by drops in the murder rate in the rest of the country.

If Trump was talking about the entire nation of the United States of America (Trump isn't Mayor Emanual of Chicago. Trump is president of the United States of America.) then CBS' point is Trump basically got it backward.

U.S. Cities Experienced Another Big Rise In Murder In 2016
Murder almost certainly increased substantially in the U.S. in 2016, one year after it rose at its fastest pace in a quarter century.

The government won’t release official 2016 crime statistics for another nine months. But data from individual police departments indicates that murder rose in most of the country’s biggest cities in 2016, in some cases dramatically. Because a large share of murders take place in big cities, a substantial increase there means that the country’s overall murder total almost certainly rose as well.1

Using a combination of official police data and local media reports, I was able to collect murder counts through at least November 2016 for 73 of the 83 U.S. cities with populations above 250,000, and partial data for all but one of the rest.2 The counts are preliminary and could be subject to change before they are submitted to the FBI for inclusion in the Uniform Crime Report that will be published in September.

This year’s rise appears slightly smaller than last year’s dramatic increase. The big cities experienced roughly a 11.3 percent increase in murder in 2016, which is down from the same group’s 14.8 percent increase from 2014 to 2015. Still, the figures suggest that big cities have seen murder rise by more than a quarter in just two years, likely the biggest two-year increase since 1989 to 1991.

Now please post the comment President Trump made about the NATIONAL murder rate.

Thanks.
