they do. they're manipulated by the normal trappings of life, cynicism, moral degradation, propaganda, maybe family abuse or even systematic abuse from childhood, to break down the mind and create subservient or even multiple personalities. its a defense mechanism to to disassociate and create a new persona and wall off the persona that experiences trauma.
