Trump wants to close the Department of Education, joining calls by GOP rivals

Well I did teach for 30 years and had multiple multiple interactions with federals doing reviews... and I'm still connected with what's going on in the schools... if you're
not actually working in or with the schools it's kind of impossible to comment on what is happening and what should be happening.... I would never feel comfortable commenting on what takes place when our union is plotting... I'm just not there... but I'm still totally offended by what the presidents are saying.... so I get that you're worried about who my be making decisions about your local schools or local schools in general.. if you're thinking that a jpp poster would be in charge...lol

What would be worse, one of our made up internet characters

or one of our real life miscreants?

I guess it would be frightening either way.

I don't think we have to worry about either of those choices... There are a lot of stories for every occasion here... that's for sure...lol...
It's pretty easy too pick out the phonies though...they post more than anyone....;)

Methinks that education is not a power granted to the Federal Government in the constitution and as such it is therefore a power of the States or of the Individual. In this case it is the States. Hence an unconstitutional power grab by the feds would be a good thing to end. The Federal Government doesn't get to just decide what powers it has, they are specifically listed in the constitution.
As we see in Florida, nobody is taking power away from the states to indoctrinate their students.

I believe that any school can refuse any Fed. guidelines as long as they also refuse any Fed. funding.

No different than hospitals' ability to turn away patients who cannot pay, as long as they refuse Medicare money.

My point is that many beneficial government agencies exist that can, by your reasoning, be excused from existence.

I can't argue with that, other than to say you've made no case for the "beneficial" part yet........so we agree that they should be abolished as well?......

Former President Donald Trump said Wednesday he wants to close the Department of Education and have state governments “run the education of our children,” pushing for a long-held Republican goal that has been endorsed by several other 2024 GOP candidates.

“We’re going to end education coming out of Washington, DC. We’re going to close it up – all those buildings all over the place and people that in many cases hate our children. We’re going to send it all back to the states,” Trump said in a new campaign video.

But eliminating the US Department of Education would not necessarily give any more power to states over K-12 schools. While the federal agency helps the president execute education policies, the power to set curriculum, establish schools and determine enrollment eligibility already lies with the states and local school boards.

Trump has been floating the idea of eliminating the Department of Education since his 2016 presidential campaign. When Trump was president, his administration proposed merging the Education and Labor departments into one federal agency as part of a larger plan to restructure the government. The proposal needed approval from Congress and was never implemented. Trump, as president, also tried to cut billions of dollars from the Education Department’s budget.

Various Republicans have called for eliminating the Education Department since its establishment as a Cabinet-level agency in 1980. Among Trump’s rivals for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination, tech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, former Vice President Mike Pence and North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum have endorsed the idea.

Generally, the US Department of Education is charged with playing a leadership role “in the ongoing national dialogue over how to improve the results of our education system for all students,” according to its website. It also administers federal funding, appropriated by Congress, to not only K-12 schools but colleges as well. It manages the federal student loan and student aid programs, and sets accountability standards for higher education institutions.

LOL.

Another moron politician who creates soundbites for the least educated among us. Lest we forget who trump put in charge of education:

To the president who asked her to run the Department of Education, she was a loyal lieutenant who argued for her department's irrelevance in a nation where control of schools is a local affair — that is, until she argued the opposite, at the president's urging, and threatened schools with a loss of federal funding if they refused to reopen mid-pandemic.

To Christian conservatives, she was a hero who once proclaimed, "I fight against anyone who would have government be the parent to everyone." DeVos used her bully pulpit to champion religious education, push for school choice and help private schools in financial turmoil.

To her critics, including the nation's teachers unions, she was a stone-cold villain who famously suggested guns belong in some schools (to fend off bears), who needed the vice president's vote to survive confirmation and who spent four years disparaging American public education.

In the infamous words of the last moron politician who couldn't remember which agencies he would do away with during a debate:

"Ooops"

what ARE the federal education programs?....

There are more than we can name--Pell Grants, federal school loans, special education programs, grants for various types of computers and equipment, many different vocational training programs, programs for homeless students, migrants, Indians, and many more.

See Google: federal education programs.

Essentially, the federal government does not administer these programs but supplies the funding and the programs are administered by the state/local schools. This uses the "tax and spend for the general welfare" provision since the federal government has no direct authority over education.

Of course, there are many federal functions not specifically contained in the Constitution. Powers do not have to be specifically authorized since the Constitution includes the "necessary and proper" clause.

They are not all "specifically" listed as Congress is given the power to do whatever is necessary to carry out the (17?) delegated powers. This gave Congress the power to create a national bank which Jefferson opposed because it was not absolutely necessary since the U. S. could keep its money in banks as it had been doing.

The Constitution does not specifically give the courts the power to declare laws/acts unconstitutional; or control immigration, engage in war without congressional declaration, issue executive orders, create a Space Force, etc. In practice, both liberals and conservatives favor some federal actions not specifically contained in the Constitution.

so essentially these "important" federal education programs are nothing more than handing out money.....so shut down the DoE and just hand the money to the states.....I recall estimate back in the 90s that as much as 75% of the education budget gets spent on administration in DC and never gets to the states....
