Former President Donald Trump said Wednesday he wants to close the Department of Education and have state governments “run the education of our children,” pushing for a long-held Republican goal that has been endorsed by several other 2024 GOP candidates.

“We’re going to end education coming out of Washington, DC. We’re going to close it up – all those buildings all over the place and people that in many cases hate our children. We’re going to send it all back to the states,” Trump said in a new campaign video.

But eliminating the US Department of Education would not necessarily give any more power to states over K-12 schools. While the federal agency helps the president execute education policies, the power to set curriculum, establish schools and determine enrollment eligibility already lies with the states and local school boards.

Trump has been floating the idea of eliminating the Department of Education since his 2016 presidential campaign. When Trump was president, his administration proposed merging the Education and Labor departments into one federal agency as part of a larger plan to restructure the government. The proposal needed approval from Congress and was never implemented. Trump, as president, also tried to cut billions of dollars from the Education Department’s budget.

Various Republicans have called for eliminating the Education Department since its establishment as a Cabinet-level agency in 1980. Among Trump’s rivals for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination, tech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, former Vice President Mike Pence and North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum have endorsed the idea.

Generally, the US Department of Education is charged with playing a leadership role “in the ongoing national dialogue over how to improve the results of our education system for all students,” according to its website. It also administers federal funding, appropriated by Congress, to not only K-12 schools but colleges as well. It manages the federal student loan and student aid programs, and sets accountability standards for higher education institutions.

Trump supporters Theme Song?

Methinks that education is not a power granted to the Federal Government in the constitution and as such it is therefore a power of the States or of the Individual. In this case it is the States. Hence an unconstitutional power grab by the feds would be a good thing to end. The Federal Government doesn't get to just decide what powers it has, they are specifically listed in the constitution.

Republicans have been calling for the end of the DOE since Reagan. None of those plans would actually do away with most of the federal educational programs but just scatter them among various agencies.

Trump is also calling for a 10% tariff on all imported products which amounts to a $300 billion tax increase.

The Dept of Education doesn't educate anyone. It is also unconstitutional. Congress never had authority to create such a department.

The same can be said about the FDA. But I'm sure you don't want questionable meat in the store, right?

He's right....States and local government should be in charge of schools...definitely not the Feds....

That wouldn't be a problem here in Boston,
or in New York or San Francisco.

But in other parts of our fair nation,
I can only imagine who'd be running education.

I imagine the Chinese love the idea of cracker-goobers educating American children,
but should we be happy about churning out TDAKs and volsrocks?

No, I'll go with the Feds, myself.
That's just me, though.

I witnessed the Feds in action more than once in real life and let me tell you... they shouldn't be anywhere near our schools ..... and I'm pretty sure that Cracker Goobers wouldn't be the ones in charge...lol... I'm sure the Chinese do love the presidents of both major teachers unions though... they take cringeworthy to an entire new level...

We now know for certain that it's possible

to LOOK at the exact same thing

but SEE totally different things.

This isn't a two-person phenomenon, however.
No, .
this is an accurate description of the entire United States of America.

I wish there were some way to measure the collective prediction success rate

of our optimists and our pessimists

because I'm fairly certain

that the smarter half are going to be right again

and that's definitely not good for the future of our republic.

At the very least, I can hold myself blameless!!!:innocent:

can you tell us something good that the DoE has accomplished.....

Red states already are languishing in education compared to blue states. This would make things worse. Religious zealots and conspiracy nuts would love it.

Well I did teach for 30 years and had multiple multiple interactions with federals doing reviews... and I'm still connected with what's going on in the schools... if you're
not actually working in or with the schools it's kind of impossible to comment on what is happening and what should be happening.... I would never feel comfortable commenting on what takes place when our union is plotting... I'm just not there... but I'm still totally offended by what the presidents are saying.... so I get that you're worried about who my be making decisions about your local schools or local schools in general.. if you're thinking that a jpp poster would be in charge...lol

So you don't want any federal money going to education!
Some half ass so called teacher you are!
