Accepting any pardon is an automatic admission of guilt...
That is established law.

1/ THREAD: Everyone is talking presidential pardons today. But Mueller & NYAG Schneiderman appear to have Trump and team cornered.

2/ If Trump pardons himself/team from Federal crimes it comes with the imputation of guilt (Burdick v US). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burdick_v._United_States …

3/ Burdick v US says a pardoned person must introduce pardon into court proceedings, otherwise the pardon must be disregarded by the court.

4/ Burdick v US also says, to do this, the pardoned person must accept the pardon—it cannot be forced upon its subject.

5/ If Trump pardons himself/team from Federal crimes, it comes with the imputation of guilt, according to Burdick v US.

6/ If pardons are introduced into court proceedings the imputation of guilt makes it that much easier for NYAG State charges to convict.

7/ Presidential Pardons extends to federal criminal prosecution but not to State level.

Level39‏ @level39

8/ In other words, issuing a presidential pardon for Federal crimes may help guarantee a conviction for State crimes.

Memo to Trump: Anyone you pardon can be compelled to testify without any grant of immunity, and that testimony could undo you.

10/ Trump has the power to pardon anyone he wants. But is it a good idea? It carries *enormous* risk. He appears to be cornered. /END

He pleaded guilty to an illegal (at that time) homosexual offense and was thrown in jail.
He wasn't sent to gaol, he was given the alternative of chemical castration using cyproterone acetate. This led to him growing breasts and bloating which may have been some of the reasons for his suicide. Pretty damn shocking and barbaric, the world lost a genius who could have contributed so much more otherwise.

Can a US president pardon himself?

NO .. the Constitution states that the president can be prosecuted .. which he could not be if he had the power to pardon himself .. and if he could, he could commit murder or any heinous crime with impunity.

You're right, jail was the other choice.

How do innocent people serve decades in prison for a crime they didn't commit?

What does that have to do with pardons? If they are determined to be innocent of a crime, then they are exonerated, not pardoned.

"In legal terms, when a suspect is exonerated he/she is not held responsible for any crime or civil wrong that he/she was formerly accused of. This may occur prior or during the actual trial given the available evidence.

A pardon however, is a situation where the suspect is indeed found guilty but is forgiven for his act and his sentence is cut short. This may be either through an absolute pardon usually by an enactment by the Head of State or a conditional pardon such as parole/probation. The condition is such that the criminal must report his/her activities routinely to a probation officer to ensure that the criminal behave appropriately in the community."
