What happens to all of the Inkster Schools’ Employees?
With the exception of only a few staff that will remain working in this transition period, unfortunately all
Inkster Public Schools’ employees will be terminated.
Why is Inkster Public Schools being dissolved?
This June, the Legislature and Governor approved two bills (Public Act 96 and 97 of 2013) specifically
crafted to lead to the dissolution of two school districts governed by a locally elected school board:
Inkster Public Schools and the Buena Vista School District. It is unfortunate that this legislation was
enacted so quickly and it does not appear that much consideration was given to the fact that the
beginning of a new school year was just around the corner. The impact on these school districts, these
communities and most importantly their children, is extremely unfortunate.
On What Basis?
Under those two new laws, the State Superintendent and State Treasurer have the ability to jointly
decide to dissolve a school district if six specified criteria are met. These six criteria were narrowlytailored
to capture only Inkster Public Schools and the Buena Vista School District and did not address
the ongoing deficit problems in the additional 50-plus school districts statewide.
