My best friend from nursing school is from Ukraine. Her father died when she was a young teen. For many years, her mother (who is a physician) never told the kids what happened to him. He had worked for the KGB, and they killed him because he was a bit too outspoken about Ukraine being under Russia's thumb. As you can imagine, she despises Putin.
