Trump rips John Lewis: Worry about your ‘crime infested’ district

Outrage After Trump Insults Civil Rights Icon John Lewis

"I believe in forgiveness. I believe in trying to work with people. It will be hard. It's going to be very difficult. I don't see this president-elect as a legitimate president," Rep. John Lewis says

On the Saturday morning of a holiday weekend honoring Martin Luther King, Jr., President-elect Donald Trump trashed civil rights leader and U.S. Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.), after Lewis said he would not attend next week's inauguration ceremony.

The Georgia lawmaker—who has served in Congress since 1987; is the last living speaker of the 1963 March on Washington; and was severely beaten after leading civil rights demonstrators across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama in 1965—told NBC News on Friday that he does not plan to attend Trump's inauguration.

"It will be the first one that I miss since I've been in Congress," Lewis said. "You cannot be at home with something that you feel that is wrong, is not right." Lewis is one of a handful of Democratic lawmakers who have announced this week that they'll be skipping the ceremony.

"I believe in forgiveness. I believe in trying to work with people. It will be hard. It's going to be very difficult. I don't see this president-elect as a legitimate president," Lewis said, citing alleged Russian interference in the 2016 election.

On Saturday morning, thin-skinned Trump struck back in a series of tweets.
"Congressman John Lewis should spend more time on fixing and helping his district, which is in horrible shape and falling apart (not to mention crime infested) rather than falsely complaining about the election results," he wrote. "All talk, talk, talk - no action or results. Sad!"

ThinkProgress joined other news outlets in pointing out:
Trump's assertion that Lewis is presiding over a failing and crime-ridden district is not true. The predominantly black district represented by Lewis includes very nice parts of Atlanta and its suburbs that can hardly be described as in "horrible shape." Since 2009, crime has fallen by 30 percent.

The Hill reported:
More than 87 percent of adults in the district are high school graduates, and more than 40 percent are college graduates, according to Census data. The median household income is just over $48,000.

This isn't the first time Trump has wrongly linked majority African-American areas to crime and poverty. He did so multiple times on the campaign trail, including during the second presidential debate.

He certainly can disagree. And have an opinion. But not decide what laws he thinks is right or wrong. And I mean that respectfully.
He has a right to question the legitimacy of this Presidency, it in no way affects Trumps being sworn in next week.

The only problem I have with this issue is that Trump is being vilified for dishing it back to a civil rights icon.

Are they exempt from criticism?

It is the claims he made that are being challenged, that Lewis does nothing and the remarks about his district. Home of the Falcons who are beating Seattle at half time

He did not question it though. He stated it as fact. " I don't see this president-elect as a legitimate president," Rep. John Lewis says". With nothing to support it other than his opinion. Not fact. Not law. I fail to see how a lawmaker ( and this goes for anyone in the Senate or House) cannot abide by the laws of this land of which they create. That is my problem with this whole thing.

This is what disgusts me about political hacks. Well, they did it, we complained about it and said it wasn't right, well, now we are going to do it for revenge.

Great logic there.

Get fucking used to it. You reap what you sow.

I respectfully disagree, he was briefed on the Russia ordeal and made the statement based on what he learned in that briefing.

“I think the Russians participated in helping this man get elected,” he added, also calling it a “conspiracy.” “They helped destroy the candidacy of Hillary Clinton.”

John Lewis to Chuck Todd

We are obviously not going to see eye to eye on this. I like the way you argue your points though. Fairly and with supportive documentation.

Oh, some of the news and comments I read seemed to take issue just because he was a civil rights icon.

His comments about his district etc., was extremely UNpresidential. Sad!

he was.....its a shame when dementia takes its victims.....now he's ruined his reputation......

Dementia? How sad you resorted to that, little one. Sounds like a Trump excuse. YOU have no proof he has dementia. He cemented a great legacy by saying it like it is. He simply spoke the truth.

Are you really saying Lewis has dementia? And from the news, I don't see where his reputation has taken a hit.

You wouldn't see it on the news.

Trump's Tweets aren't all anger and spittle. I'm convinced he puts some thought into them. Lewis' precinct does have some issues and by calling attention to them, it signals to future attackers that they better have their own house in order before they attack Trump.

I think Trump opened up floodgates with his tweets. He will be attacked more than any other president in history.
