U.S. jobless claims dip in sign of labor market strength


Initial claims for state unemployment benefits dropped 1,000 to a seasonally adjusted 216,000 for the week ended Dec. 22, the Labor Department said on Thursday.

Initial claims have now fallen in three of the last four weeks and are just above the 49-year low of 202,000 reached in the week ended Sept. 15.

The four-week moving average of initial claims, considered a better measure of labor market trends as it irons out week-to-week volatility, also fell last week.

Sarah Huckabee Sanders ‘set to leave White House by end of 2018,’ report says

Rumours are swirling about White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders possibly leaving her role.

The most visible member of the White House has told friends she plans to leave, according to sources who spoke to CBS News...

Ms Sanders and Mr Shah have not responded to a request for comment from The Independent nor any other media outlets. She did tweet on Wednesday evening about an hour after the CBS News report that she “love her job” and accused the media of not speaking with her about her alleged departure.

The 35-year-old Ms Sanders did not, however, directly deny that she would be leaving by the end of 2018.

Dow drops 500 points after record-breaking rally



Stocks dropped sharply Thursday morning as the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 500 points one day after a historic rally

The Dow, Nasdaq composite and S&P 500 were down roughly 2 percent by 10:25 a.m. Thursday, a day after stocks surged to erase record losses.

The Dow gained a record-high 1,086 points Wednesday and the S&P rose 5 percent to escape from a bear market.

President Trump's spiraling anger with the Federal Reserve and a government shutdown with no end in sight have set the stock market on track for its worst December since 1931. Stocks have slipped into the red for 2018 after soaring from Trump's election through the second half of this year.
