Trump Moves to Deport Vietnam War Refugees

The Trump administration is resuming its efforts to deport certain protected Vietnamese immigrants who have lived in the United States for decades—many of them having fled the country during the Vietnam War.

This is the latest move in the president’s long record of prioritizing harsh immigration and asylum restrictions, and one that’s sure to raise eyebrows—the White House had hesitantly backed off the plan in August before reversing course. In essence, the administration has now decided that Vietnamese immigrants who arrived in the country before the establishment of diplomatic ties between the United States and Vietnam are subject to standard immigration law—meaning they are all eligible for deportation.

the variable you choose to leave out of course guno is these people are all ex-felons. Now this still violates the U.S.-Vietnam agreement and its really about the administration trying to close any "loopholes" to having more control over who can be here

From a political perspective Vietnamese were one of the few minority groups that vote Republican. Trump doing what he can to end that.

I did not know that. I lived around a bunch of them when I lived in Garden Grove...good hard working people that could not drive a car for **** that all owned business of some sort.

There aren't THAT many but importantly, I don't believe they have the power, clout or money to have insinuated themselves in the REP hierarchy. I might be wrong but I think we would know that. (Remember the GOP 'parades' ITS minorities).

They're relatively new to the country and Asians focused more economic gains than political ones. It's the same reason you dont see them prominently featured in the Democratic Party either

Ex-felons? So the reason they weren't granted citizenship was because the committed CRIMES? Any links?

No links, heard the story on NPR yesterday while driving. It wasn't a large number of them and they had all served their time, but yes, they were felons

Exactly! Though I'm spitballing here, if they were interested in becoming 'political', I feel sure they would be more welcome among us DEMS than they would be among REPS.

Asians voted majority for republicans in presidential elections up to Obama I believe.

Of all the GROUPS I could see committing felonies, they would seem to be among the least likely. (Though I've only known a few, they worked their ASSES OFF, they wouldn't have had time)

These were people who fled south Vietnam right after its collapse so it's possible themose circumstances led them to do certain acts. But on the whole if we were to stereotype they do tend to work and study hard

Found this. Interesting

Vietnamese-Americans, who number nearly 2 million, with especially large concentrations in California and Texas, are part of the larger narrative of Asian-Americans who have switched party affiliations and votes from Republican to Democratic. In 1992, Republicans won among Asian-Americans by a 22-point margin in the presidential election, according to exit polls; in 2012, Asian-Americans voted Democratic by 47 points, which was nearly double the margin in 2008.

In 2016, according to the National Asian American Survey (NAAS), there are far more undecided voters, but the Democratic ticket still leads among Asian-Americans by 43 points. As NPR political demographics reporter Asma Khalid said in a recent FiveThirtyEight podcast accompanying this series on voters, “Within the span of two decades, you can see that Hillary Clinton will potentially be able to win an overwhelming majority of Asian-Americans, the very voters who overwhelmingly did not vote for her husband two decades ago.” She calls it the “most rapid realignment” of any racial or ethnic demographic in the country.

I agree. What kinds of CRIMES--as in necessity to SURVIVE? I'd want to see specifics before I'd kick them out. But Trump relishes PUNCHING DOWN.
