President Donald Trump recently stated that Andrew Jackson reminds him an awful lot of himself. Jackson, our seventh president, was a lawyer, cotton farmer, congressman, judge, senator, war hero and a Democrat (although the Democratic Party in the 1830s was very different than today). So I don’t see the parallels.
Trump reminds me more of his fellow New Yorker, Millard Fillmore. Fillmore became our 13th president upon the death of Zachary Taylor in 1850. He was not given the Whig Party nomination in 1852, but in 1856 he ran for president on the Know-Nothing Party, which was rabidly anti-immigrant. Know-Nothings wanted to deny immigrants jobs, believing that American businesses should only employ true Americans. Interestingly, Fillmore’s running mate was Andrew Jackson Donelson, who was President Jackson’s nephew.
Fillmore is largely remembered for being our most forgotten president. Trump is one that we may wish to forget as well.
