Throughout his campaign he has demonstrated what many have always known, that the core of conservatism is hatred, racism and misogyny. Now he has let slip the truth behind their "pro life" cause, i.e., that it must criminally punish women.
Many pro lifers have rushed to object, arguing that Trump is a fraud that does not understand the pro life cause. They reassure us that they will only seek criminal punishment for the doctors, never for women.
I have often wondered why wouldn't they punish women? If abortion is murder then shouldn't the person that hired the doctor/hitman be punished too?
Regardless, if you are reassured then you should look at how pro-lifers in other countries have criminalized miscarriages and are jailing women.
We would certainly have to do the same to realize the goals of "pro lifers.". In the black markets that will emerge from only punishing doctors, abortifacients will become a more attractive option. An abortifacient will be difficult to trace to its source and suppliers could easily service many more customers than a back alley doctor could.
The response will be what they have done in those other nations, the jailing of women having suspicious miscarriages. Some will surely be "guilty" but not all.
Trump understands the "pro-life" cause just fine, his only fault is a lack of practice in the deceptive "pro-life" rhetoric. "Pro-lifers" know that punishment for women is not appealing to voters and 2012 was another lesson for them in how critical it is for them to obscure their ultimate goals. The party of dog whistle politics can't afford to lose white women in large numbers.
"Speaking his mind unapologetically" (BTW, that's just code for being an unabashed bigoted asshole) is frequently cited as appealing to many of his supporters. But in this instance, Trump panders to the far right with something I don't think he really believes. Then when he is called on it he has quickly and obediently retreated to the PC edited and obscured version of "pro-life" rhetoric. On the issue of abortion, Trump is not speaking his mind. He is an impostor playing an impostor.
