Mayor Bill de Blasio plans to push for a tax on wealthy New Yorkers to pay for improvements needed to address the crisis engulfing New York City’s subway, city officials said on Sunday.
The proposal is the latest move in the battle between Mr. de Blasio and Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo over who bears responsibility for repairing the deteriorating transit system. The plan would also pay for half-price MetroCards for low-income riders — part of a national movement that has gained momentum in New York.
Mr. de Blasio will announce a so-called millionaires tax on Monday for wealthy New York City residents to pay for subway and bus upgrades and for reduced fares for more riders, an idea that has been successful in Seattle.
His funding push comes as the subway faces a multitude of problems, and leaders at the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which operates the subway, have called on Mr. de Blasio to provide more money for the system.
Mr. de Blasio and Mr. Cuomo, who are Democrats and have long had a strained relationship, have engaged in an acrimonious public skirmish over financing for public transit. Mr. Cuomo controls the transportation authority, but he has called on Mr. de Blasio to help fix the system. Both leaders have been under pressure to address the crisis, with worsening subway service hurting Mr. Cuomo’s approval rating among voters, and with Mr. de Blasio being targeted by a harsh television ad campaign by the subway workers union.
“Rather than sending the bill to working families and subway and bus riders already feeling the pressure of rising fares and bad service, we are asking the wealthiest in our city to chip in a little extra to help move our transit system into the 21st century,” Mr. de Blasio said in a statement.

the minimum wage, your career, was never meant to be a "living" wage. It was set up for teens working summer jobs, people working second jobs, people between jobs.
So think about it, you're what 30 something and still working at Burger King, does that sound like the American way.
This country should be populated with people that understand this concept, but instead we got you. Wanting to make enough money flipping burgers to vacation in Bali once a year and drive a BMW.
I don't want to stop by your "career" to pick up a snack and fork over 20 bucks for a burger and fry.

It sounds like that right? The difference is this raise is organic because it is set due to the equilibrium of labor and capital while a minimum wage increase is arbitrary.

This would make all the sense in the world if it didn't pertain solely to jobs for school children, part-time jobs and so on, however because of greedy employers, who don't want to pay a living wage or supply healthcare benefits to learned workers, such as teachers, office workers, min. wage is an issue

A rising tide lifts all ships. The only "arbitrary" argument for a higher minimum is the $15 number people keep asking for like idiots. Look at inflation, look at cost of living. I think $15 is too much when you factor those in, and the current $7.25 is too little. Right now too many businesses are relying on their employees to get government assistance to subsidize their low wages.
arbitrary in that its just a random number set by the government whereas whatever number labor and capital agree to without the additional downward pressure of slave labor would be what the labor is actually worth.

Reducing productivity and growth to force wages higher does not help the economy grow.
the problem with capitalists is they love the free market until that free market dictates higher wages for labor.
Not really. Min wage workers have no skills. The ones being referred to do have them.

We can't just keep doing what we've been doing on immigration. Besides, market shortages correct themselves eventually. Maybe we need to go back to teaching trades in high school to fill the vacuum. Carpenters and brick layers make decent money and that money will stay here if we hire US citizens to do it.
