‘Trump Has Lost the Country’: Ross Douthat Warns Conservatives Will Bear the Brunt of Trump’s Failings

New York Times columnist Ross Douthat published a new Interesting Times episode on Wednesday, arguing that President Donald Trump has “lost the country” one year into his second term and makes the case its the right who will suffer the most from Trump’s “failed” leadership.

“I want to tell you a secret. One that most conservatives on the internet don’t want you to know. A year into his second presidency, Donald Trump has lost the country,” Douthat began in the clip, before playing a highlight reel of pundits breaking down Trump polling:

“The majority of voters believe the country is worse off today than it was a year ago.” “Approval rating at 37 percent, the lowest of his second term.” “A failure. Fail, fail, fail.” And the grand coalition that he united to defeat Kamala Harris has evaporated.
“And all of this was predictable. From the first days of DOGE through the debacle in Minneapolis, the Trump administration has consistently governed as if swing voters aren’t part of its coalition. And now, guess what? They’re not,” he continued, adding:

But here’s the thing. It isn’t moderates and swing voters who lose out when the Trump administration becomes unpopular. It’s people on the right. People like me, and certainly people further to my right who support many of the things the Trump administration has tried to do, from securing the border to pressuring American institutions to become more ideologically diverse, to resetting and rolling back D.E.I. All of that, all of that agenda will just disappear if the Republican Party can’t win elections.

I read the column this morning...and what can I say. My feelings are that Trump NEVER HAD the true conservatives. The true conservatives only backed him because they could not back Kamala Harris. The true conservatives see Trump in much the same negative light as do those of us on the left or center left.

I want to see Trump lose big, but to be honest, I also want to see the Republican Party strong enough to be an effective "loyal opposition.,"

The scumbag and his continuing supporters have effectively destroyed our nation. I suspect it will take decades to make even a modest revival.

I hope I am wrong.

Oh no, not another NYT's moron repeating the same bullshit these fools have been saying for years. Guess what? There are tens of thousands of people as dumb as Guno that will click and then spread these monthly stories to every dipshit like him month after month, year after year for a tiny hit of badly needed libtard dope.

Reality? Trump has enjoyed the highest sustained approval numbers from his party in American history. He's maintained anywhere from 85-93 from day one. Right now he's at 86 according to CNN polls. CNN"s Dirty Harry just reported that Trump has never lost any support, ever, in spite of the many stories about 'cracks' in his base imagined by countless left-wing 'journalist' since Trump's first term. Why wouldn't they when there are so many dipshits like this guy.

I know you fools need your daily dose, but these stories must be very low-grade dope by now, right? I can't imagine these are as good as the many Epstein stories, those really used to get you idiots excited, lol.

MAGA morons thought they could base an ideology on imaginary liberal tears. But 'stickin' it to the Dems' isn't going to put food on the table or create more jobs.

Trump has suggested what ICE was really about. He says he will send them to the polls. That was always the plan. That is why they are so violent and step way over policing bounds. The point is to make you fear them. Then, if you see them at the polls, you may turn around and not vote. A lower vote helps the Repugs. Trump stops at nothing to "win".

Trump will never win over the Liberals, but he's losing Conservatives by derailing into an authoritarian police state. Those actions only please the minority of white supremacists, not mainstream conservatives. Certainly not the Independents who have turned away from him in droves.

Donald Trump remains broadly unpopular, with record low job approval among Independents and a record high 49% of Americans who say they strongly disapprove of Trump's job handling

  • 27% of Independents approve of Trump's job handling and 67% disapprove — a net job approval of -40
    • That's a record-low net job approval for Trump among Independents, in either his first or second terms
    • The net job approval of -40 among Independents is a steep drop from last week, when Trump's net job approval with the group was -31

If they get rough in Texas, I expect more than a few will be shot right through their masks. LOL

I hope he's right, but I fear he's not. The American public was dumb enough to elect this walking orange disaster twice.

I no longer have any faith that any but me will do the right thing.

They're also stupid enough to believe Trump's numbers and not reality. The 30% of voters who are Democrats will never vote for Trump and the while the majority of Republicans will still vote for the "R" on election day, like happened to Hillary in 2016, I suspect many of them will simply not vote at all.

Worse, as noted above, are the 40% of voters who are Independents, over 2/3s of whom strongly disapprove of Trump. MAGAts think anyone who isn't a fellow White Nationalist is a pink pussy hat, twinkle-toed Librul. This is evidence they are delusional since they are ignoring Independents...especially those who own guns. LOL

I'm quite surprised they haven't yet.

You realize it's only a matter of time before someone starts taking them out, right?

And that's gonna be bad.
My guess that's why they only attack Blue States with strong gun laws. They're not ICEholes, they're ICEpussies.

Maybe Red State Patriots supporting the Resistance can go help them out :flagsal:

To paraphrase Legina's favorite post of mine, I support shooting violent Nazis down where they stand. :)

God bless America. God bless our freedom to choose as Americans. Fight tyranny. Fight those seeking to limit your rights.

Our forefathers firmly believed sending NAZIs off to meet their just desserts was a good thing.
