The NFL should have nipped this in the bud when Kap started bending the knee.

The rest of us are disallowed by our employers from using our jobs as political platforms, why should the NFL be any different? And pan-out over most NFL crowds and you'll see something that very much resembles a Trump rally. On the cultural spectrum, NFL fans are much closer to NASCAR than uber left Hollywood.

Not a good business calculation on the NFL's part.

Yup. They could have offered an appropriate forum but took the worst possible path. Now they have no good options.
