It's the classic Middle East two-step.

It's either secular despot or some manifestation of Islamic rule---and you have to pick between the two. As I've mentioned in other places, Syrian refugees were fleeing ISIS more so than Assad.

Granted, Assad is a 'bad actor' but you just can't get rid of him and expect anything but some form of Islamic theocracy to spring up in its place. And that's the good outcome lol. At worst, you get another Libya.

Increasingly, I'm leaning towards getting the hell out of it in terms of going after Assad.
