Trade Wars Are Easy To Win. Just Ask The Farmers

My heart pumps pee for them. The vast majority of farmers I know, and I know a lot of them, were some of the most enthusiastic Trump supporters out there. C’est la vie.
Agree. On the one hand, I have little sympathy. On the other, the devastation to the economy should not be ignored.

As part of his testimony to Congress, Michael Cohen revealed that, under the direction of President Trump, he sent letters to Trump’s high schools and colleges threatening them with legal action and jail time if they ever released Trump’s academic records. Cohen provided a record of one such letter sent to the president of Fordham University, which Trump attended for two years before transferring to complete his undergraduate degree at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. Trump’s high school has confirmed receiving an identical letter, while the University of Pennsylvania ... declined to comment.

So, here is a man who will use the full weight of the law to cover up his college grades from half a century ago. I guess it's that famous modesty - he doesn't want anyone to know how brilliant he was! ;)

:hand: :hand: yea it's modesty :rofl2:

They believe that he is hiding them because he has nothing to hide, & it actually makes sense to them. :|

Nope. It's more than just Country X agrees to buy ___ from Country Y. It is a complex system involving storage facilities (on both ends), transport to and from shipping centers, shipping itself, and so on. Once a market is closed off, it is devilishly difficult to reopen it -- particularly if others (like Brazil, Canada, Mexico, Russia, etc.) have stepped in to fill the niche. If you are a business owner dependent upon overseas goods for your own product(s), which would you prefer to do business with? A country with a stable government and a reliable supply chain? Or one with an unstable, irrational leader who may or may not take actions that negatively affect your supplier(s)?
Exactly. It's not as easy as going out back and picking a few bushels of beans, and driving to the Farmer's Market.

Why else did they come up with futures contracts?

The mid west farmers are going to lose the markets that took years for them to create, so how long will we have to subsidize these framers?????
Midway into '21, when our relationships around the globe have been repaired.

Trump has no knowledge base for running an economy. There are almost no economists who think tariffs are a good idea. But Trump is not using them for economic reasons, but weapons in political purposes. He is using the pain he is causing Americans to pressure China. China thinks long term. They may do the same thing and more suffering will come our way. China does not have elections to deal with. They can wait Daffy out.
True on all counts. China can wait a lot longer than any democracy. And they will.

It is s stupid one. Almost no economists think a tariff war is a good idea. Daffy who disdains experts and self-education goes by his large gut. He has no knowledge base but relies on his bullying that worked when he had the power over contractors and could cheat them and get away with it. It is not the same thing. Trump went bankrupt many times. He can do it to the whole country this time.
Precisely. The govt is not supposed to be run like a business. A failed business, no less. I hope everyone's curiosity has been satisfied, although they could have picked a real businessperson to be POTUS.

The govt isn't supposed to turn a profit. Not that trump is even coming close.

Trump made up for it by giving them billions from the treasury. It was not enough. The tariffs have resulted in foreclosures and losses.tps://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/national-farmers-union-trump-tariffs-to-hurt-ranchers-for-decades-2019-8-1028411224 You should seek info from places other than Fox Gnus and Breitbart.
Explain to the fool that the tariffs hit Chinese goods when they hit our shores.
