WASHINGTON (AP) -- Americans would have to sign up for a new military draft after turning 18 if the incoming chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee has his way.

New York Democratic Rep. Charles Rangel said Sunday he sees his idea as a way to deter politicians from launching wars. He believes a draft would bolster U.S. troop levels that are currently insufficient to cover potential future action in Iran, North Korea and Iraq.

Rangel, a veteran of the Korean War who has unsuccessfully sponsored legislation on conscription in the past, said he will propose a measure early next year.

In 2003, he proposed a draft covering people age 18 to 26. This year, he offered a plan to mandate military service for men and women between age 18 and 42. It went nowhere in the Republican-led Congress.

If there were a fair and ballanced draft instead of a voluntary army, a draft that inducted the children of the rich and powerfull evenly with the poor and less powerfull I do not belive that the Iraq war would have happend.

True, but when has a draft ever been fair or balanced? There have always been ways for the children of the wealthy to avoid serving if they didn't want to, college deferment being only the most obvious and above-board. Rangel's fooling himself if he thinks it would be any different this time.

I believe I understand what he's doing. He doesn't so much want the draft reinstated as he wants to draw attention to the problem.

The Dems are coming back to power, so we will have openly gay jarheads soon :)
 
Kerry had a better plan before he dropped it in the last election. He proposed a National Service Plan for ALL 18 year olds. They would choose what service they wanted to serve for 2 years.
