Who said they would beat a high power unstreetworthy ICE? EVs are not track vehicles. Neither are vans and pickup trucks. In fact, EVs have very long-lasting regenerative brakes. EVs produce very high acceleration, yet are useful for errands and driving with several people in it.
I drive my high power unstreetworthy ICE car every nice weekend (and some nice weekdays).
Very long-lasting regenerative brakes? What are regenerative brakes?
What you say was the SAME exact issue most ICE American Muscle cars suffered for decades. Mustangs, Corvettes, Grand Nationals, and so on and so on.
Most had big block engines that could run a quarter mile in a straight line in impressive times but when it came to cornering and braking they sucked donkey balls.
I remember my old track days racing my Porsche Boxster S versus the 'Big Block' guys and they would scream off at the start, and then i would catch them and pass them, in the corners, as the Boxster hugs the corners like a go cart with its mid engine design and Porshe more even approach to power.
Over a long race no one was choosing the muscle cars as they were just too hard to keep from crashing, or they were more likely to break down.
And YET Americans lover their muscle cars, which was just fine. If all they cared about was the rush that came with that acceleration, i was fine with that. It was their money.
BUt you fucking magats who CANNOT and WILL NOT accept that a person who is not you, can want a car for reasons you do not, just get stuck on stupid. You guys continually point at what YOU want a car for (has to be great in cold weather... has to be great in corners) as a reason to insult others and the vehicles you do not want.
That's all fine. My complaint isn't about the car, it's about the government wasting my tax dollars to support ownership of one class of vehicles (and building charging stations) and not the other.

On an EV, allowing the car to slow on engine (motor) braking slightly recharges the battery. On a FADEC gasoline car (all modern gasoline cars are FADEC), you don't get more gasoline. The cylinders ARE shut off though, so they aren't consuming any gasoline to do it (except one spin the engine down to idle smoothly).
The brake pads are not used for slowing down due to engine compression (or motor inductance collapse, which is the same thing for an EV).
They are called 'regenerative' because slowing in this manner on an EV very slightly recharges the battery by converting the inductive collapse into voltage. Effectively, it does not use power just as the same as a FADEC gasoline car does not use power while slowing using engine compression. (FADEC engines keep one cylinder live to allow a smooth spindown to idle on the engine. All the rest use NO FUEL. They are just pumping air.)
If you need brakes, you need brakes. EVs have larger brake pads than normal (about like a heavy truck) due to decelerating the extra mass to thermal energy. Note that these brakes are the subject of recalls on numerous EVs, due to overheating and warping problems. In a few cases the hydraulic fluid in the brake lines could not handle the excess temperatures (it boiled and the brakes begin to fail!) and had to be changed to a fluid that is more resilient to the higher temperatures.
That's all fine. My complaint isn't about the car, it's about the government wasting my tax dollars to support ownership of one class of vehicles (and building charging stations) and not the other.
The EV is a lousy car, and I have explained why. If someone wants to waste their money on one, fine. Like you, it's the subsidies and mandates that are the problem.
I tend to laugh at EV drivers, because they actually think they are 'saving the planet' or something. They certainly aren't saving money.
I suppose, like the addicted gambler that won't admit his problem, they won't admit their bad financial decision to buy such a car.
