Tom Petty hospitalized, status unknown

Tom Petty was taken to a hospital Sunday night, law enforcement officials confirmed to ABC News.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department in Malibu responded to the singer's home at 10:50 p.m. Sunday.

The singer, 66, who wrapped his 40th anniversary tour with the Heartbreakers last month, was then rushed to UCLA Medical Center in Santa Monica. His status is currently unknown.

The Los Angeles Police Department issued a statement Monday afternoon amid numerous reports of his death, noting they had "no information about the passing of singer Tom Petty."

"Initial information was inadvertently provided to some media sources, however the LAPD has no investigative role in this matter. We apologize for any inconvenience in this reporting," the statement concluded.

Petty started 2017 being celebrated as the MusiCares Person Of The Year in February (https://www.forbes.com/sites/steveb...aise-record-8-5-million-dollars/#5f7579645aab). Following that deserved honor he has been in victory lap mode, commemorating the band’s fortieth anniversary with a tour that included several high-profile festival gigs, including headlining both Bottle Rock and the debut weekend of the new Arroyo Seco.

More than seven months after his banner 2017 kicked off, Petty is wrapping up the tour, fittingly, in his adopted hometown of Los Angeles with three sold-out nights at the Hollywood Bowl. Friday night, the band played the second of those three sold-out nights and displayed all of the energy, vitality and, most importantly, frivolity that have made Petty the classic rock MVP of 2017.

Opening with the joyous “Rocking Around (With You)” just after nine PM, Petty and the band ran through a string of both hits and unexpected songs until just around 11, or apparently “well beyond his time” as he said. He proudly declared at one point that at the show the night before he had gone past curfew and it cost him $5,000.

“Tonight I’m going for 10,000,” he quipped.

That he didn’t want these shows to end comes as no surprise if you have seen any of the run of this tour. The greatest gift for any Petty fan has been watching he and the band have so much fun on stage. Dancing frequently with his arms waving, joking, leading the crowd in sing along versions of songs like “Free Fallin’” and the nearly flawless anthem, “Learning To Fly,” Petty seemed to be enjoying himself just as much as the 18,000 fans were.

To Petty’s credit, the setlist was not just a predictable greatest hits selection. Of course the aforementioned hits as well as “Refugee,” “I Won’t Back Down, “Running Down A Dream,” “Don’t Come Around Here No More” and the closing “American Girl” were crowd favorites.

Reflecting Petty’s status though as one of rock’s most prolific hit makers, the number of hits he didn’t do is almost as great as the ones he did. He could’ve included anyone of “The Waiting, “Need To Know,” “Here Comes My Girl,” “Even The Losers,” “Woman In Love (It’s Not Me),” “Don’t Do Me Like That,” “You Got Lucky” and “Walls.”

To his credit though, Petty mixed up the song selection, including 2014’s “Forgotten Man,” the rocking “I Should Have Known It” and two gems from the Wildflowers album, the sublime “Crawling Back To You” and the equally beautiful title track.

Anniversary tours can often feel phoned in or like money grabs, but much like Bruce Springsteen And The E Street band’s magical 1999 and 2000 reunion tour, these Tom Petty shows felt like an opportunity to see a rejuvenated artist that is fully enjoying his role as a rock icon. And it’s been a great celebration for both he and the fans who’ve been there for much of the past 40 years.
