No, I despise people who think that government and society should prevail over individuals, freedoms, and rights at every turn. I despise people who think the solution to every problem is to make more laws, rules, and regulations, and raise taxes to pay for it. I think people who think the government is the solution to every problem are insane.

There is not "art" or "science" to government. Government is a bludgeon wielded by a deaf and blind monster. It has no subtilty. It rarely thinks through a problem. Government is the problem, and rarely, very rarely, the solution to any problem.

That describes the Progressive Left to a tee.

Instead of socialism rising in popularity, which I would embrace, fascism is making a frightening comeback.

Briefly, this is ass backwards. Parts of Europe were, in fact, experiencing a surge in leftist politics. Today that surge is to the Right. As for the U.S. we were by and large a well functioning nation, still in the glow of the end of a world war and in the midst of an economic boom that would last another six years. It would be then you might find certain parallels with today, not that you could lay them on Joe Biden.

In 1920 the Socialist Party vote was about 900,000 (3.4%). In 2020 it was 84,000 (0.3%). That does not seem like growth.

Communism and socialism have no real support today. Most people seem to confuse socialism with social welfare programs since we seldom hear anybody talking about nationalization of the means of production and distribution.

The term Democratic Socialist gets used today. You will find folks who want to nationalize health care and want to nationalize oil companies so the desire for socialism exists to a degree. But generally speaking full on socialism has been so discredited not many people today want to call themselves outright socialists. (In San Francisco we have a couple of democratic socialists officials who fight against any new market rate housing for example.)

Indeed it is. White supremacist violence is on the uptick. There is a fine line between freedom of speech and speech that incites violence. The only answer is education.

But the West was not dying, the Chinese were not coming to kick our asses, and our society was not shredded as it is now.
