The US, UK, and West Germany backing the mujahedeen was the driving force behind the USSR's pulling out of Afghanistan, plus they were supporting Hanoi and NK the money drain was huge. OBL was a gnat when it came to the soviets losing Afghanistan. The killing blow was Reagan Star Wars the Soviets just couldn't keep up with the funding of counter weapons.
