n his prime time address Tuesday night on shutting down much of the government over funding for a wall on the southern border of the U.S., President Trump suggested that the structure could help stop heroin from entering the country.

“Every week 300 of our citizens are killed by heroin alone, 90 percent of which floods across our southern border,” he said.

ut he didn’t mention his own Drug Enforcement Administration’s conclusion that traffickers smuggle most of the heroin through legal crossing points that are patrolled, not at unguarded stretches of the border.

So how does that heroin get into the U.S. generally, and the Philadelphia region specifically?

But that premise only holds true, if they are able to collect them; because as more and more wall goes up, they will have to move to areas that haven't been used before.

That’s basically the ‘its not an absolute barrier’ argument.

It’s virtually impossible to get to absolute zero on illegal border crossings. Then again, it’s not necessary to. We can absorb a large number of illegals crossing over—we do it now. But it’s creating social costs as well other costs.

I’d speculate that a 90% reduction would be an achievable goal—and well worth the cost of the wall.

Also keep in mind the deterrent effect: one of the reasons so many illegals make the trek is because they think they can just walk across the border—and many of them do exactly that. Once the wall is up, many of them won’t bother making the trek.
