An amendment that would legalize the use of propaganda on American audiences is being inserted into the latest defense authorization bill, BuzzFeed has learned.

The amendment would “strike the current ban on domestic dissemination” of propaganda material produced by the State Department and the Pentagon, according to the summary of the law at the House Rules Committee's official website.

The tweak to the bill would essentially neutralize two previous acts—the Smith-Mundt Act of 1948 and Foreign Relations Authorization Act in 1987—that had been passed to protect U.S. audiences from our own government’s misinformation campaigns.

The bi-partisan amendment is sponsored by Rep. Mac Thornberry from Texas and Rep. Adam Smith from Washington State.

In a little noticed press release earlier in the week — buried beneath the other high-profile issues in the $642 billion defense bill, including indefinite detention and a prohibition on gay marriage at military installations — Thornberry warned that in the Internet age, the current law “ties the hands of America’s diplomatic officials, military, and others by inhibiting our ability to effectively communicate in a credible way.”

The bill's supporters say the informational material used overseas to influence foreign audiences is too good to not use at home, and that new techniques are needed to help fight Al-Qaeda, a borderless enemy whose own propaganda reaches Americans online.

I sort of expect this kind of thing from the "security at any cost" crop of Righties in congress, but this Adam Smith from Washington who co-sponsored the bill?

He's a liberal Dem who had previously voted against the "Protect America Act" in 2007 that allowed warrant-less wiretaps on US citizens.

Why would this surprise anyone? We're already being manipulated, deceived and lied to by our media and its 'experts' on the war who are really paid consultants to war profiteering companies, not to mention the myriad methods utilized by the PR apparatus which includes astroturf groups, social networking 'paid posters', etc. We got sold a bill of goods from the Rendon Group's selling of the Iraq War - they made millions, all of it paid for with tax dollars. Taxpayers fund the PR budget, which is used to lie us into whatever misadventure the current administration decides to pursue.

Everyone sells out when the price is right.

I wish it weren't. But I think the vast majority does. You need only look around at what we worship, applaud, reward and encourage to see the proof.

i can see your point on "most"...but not all. i can say what would i do if someone offered me obscene amounts of money to forgo something i believed in. right now, i would tell you, that i would tell them to pound sand. hard to say if someone offered me a billion dollars to vote for hillary clinton. :D

Pentagon Contractor Admits To Perpetrating Online Smear Campaign Against USA Today Reporters

The former head of a group that contracts with the Pentagon to produce propaganda material used oversees has admitted to launching a similar disinformation campaign against two U.S.-based reporters.

In April, two USA Today journalists claimed they were the victims of a deliberate “reputation attack” after they wrote a series of stories about the Pentagon’s contracts with groups that specialize in the production of propaganda. Days after the journalists began speaking with officials at the Pentagon and other sources for the story, fake websites and social media accounts set up in the names of the two reporters were mysteriously registered and began trying to discredit the stories.

Camille Chidiac, the minority owner and former president of Leonie Industries, one of the consulting firms that works with the Pentagon and was featured prominently in USA Today’s reporting, took responsibility for the misinformation campaign. USA Today reports:

“I take full responsibility for having some of the discussion forums opened and reproducing their previously published USA TODAY articles on them,” he said a statement released by his attorney, Lin Wood, of Atlanta.

“I recognize and deeply regret that my actions have caused concerns for Leonie and the U.S. military. This was never my intention. As an immediate corrective action, I am in the process of completely divesting my remaining minority ownership from Leonie,” Chidiac said.
