Yes, certainly cultural, and educational backwardness is a critical problem in the ME but what can we do when we have to much of it to deal with in our country? Have you read the right wing posters or this board? The ones who can't chew gum and type at the same time? The science deniers? The Birthers? The anti-intellectualism of the conservative movement?

No, we need to fix our own problems with backwardness before we can address anyone esle's issues with it.

There are reasons such things as the Enlightenment liberal democracy erupted in the West and well, no where else. The reason it didn't happen in the Middle East is because Islam is an impediment to democracy and the principles of Liberty shared by western nations.

Even today, because of Islam, most of the Middle East is forced to choose between secular despotic regimes or sharia---and has we have learned, secular despots are the lessor evil.
