Isn't it ironic?

Republicans proudly tout 'democracy', witness their yelping - ceaselessly - about the 'mandate' they received from the voters last November.

Yet when indications show that their machinations are out of step with the electorate, they whine about 'mob rule', 'stupid voters', etc.

Now that I've exposed their favorite tactic, what lame rebuttals will they offer when confronted with the facts about their spare-the-rich effort?

How does the American public come down on the issue?

A bevy of recent public polls demonstrates that the public convincingly rejects the Republicans’ approach.

Large majorities of Americans, according to a recent Gallup Poll, believe that “upper-income people” and corporations pay too little in taxes.

They are right.

  • The effective tax rate on America’s 400 richest families has dropped 45 percent since 1995, while taxes on the middle class have remained relatively steady.

  • Meanwhile, mega-corporations like GE and Bank of America paid no federal income tax last year, and Exxon Mobil paid none in 2009.

Real progress on the long-term deficit will require reductions in spending — something the White House and congressional Democrats have already agreed to.

But voters do not see this as an either/or situation.

They believe we need to do both — change our spending habits and raise taxes on top earners.
