China is currently facing some very serious problems, including a currency velocity that is almost nil.
The cities are empty. Almost no one lives in some of them. The Chinese government is literally trying to spend their way to prosperity. They are even worse off than the federal government of the United States.
Transportation? They don't maintain their aircraft. Some of them have been grounded as unairworthy if they show up in another country. The stuff they do for aircraft 'maintenance' is downright scary.
China's technology level is less than other Asiatic nations. They do okay for mechanical, but they have very poor chip technology (getting most of that from Taiwan, South Korea, and Japan). They do okay for chemicals, particularly in lithium refining and rare earth production, but it's poorly regulated and some of it is quite unsafe to work there due to EXPLOSIONS and other hazards.
They tried to force EVs on their population, but with currency velocity almost nil, that failed spectacularly.
Many Chinese, if they have a way to do it, are fleeing the country, and for a reason.

You're probably right. We've gotten ourselves into a complete mess now. We as a nation no longer even have a common experience of reality with each other.
In some sense I can see this as a really solid way to destroy America. We are a nation of "independent people" who have a tenuous grasp of what it means to be a cohesive single country to begin with (our eternal battles over states rights vs a central Federal government show that!) so someone coming in and leveraging differences among us to widen the gap would pay off handsomely as we are seeing now.
Plus China is busy building up good will all over the place with their Belt and Road initiative...and in the process getting their greedy little hands on some prime resources as well.
If we don't pull ourselves together and quickly we WILL go down hard.
