Palestine renews push for full UN membership amid US opposition

The Palestinian Authority has renewed its push for full membership at the United Nations (UN) amid long-time acts of obstructionism and opposition by the United States.

"We are negotiating in good faith with all [UNSC] members," said Riyad Mansour, the Palestinian ambassador to the UN. "There is cautious optimism in the atmosphere."

Mansour has over the past several weeks started consultations with Security Council members over a possible full Palestinian membership bid, a move which has been seen as an attempt to break the stalemate in the peace process.

You need to be an independent country (with territory) to get UN recognition. They are almost there, but not quite.

It is partially Israel's fault, but there is a whole lot of failure on the Palestinian side. They do not even have a single unified government, have not had elections in decades, and are a mess.

Palestine IS an independent country according to the UN's own international law via Resolution 181 of 1947. Rightly- or wrongly as I believe- Palestine was divided between Jews and Arabs. It doesn't matter a damn that the Arabs objected to the Resolution- it passed anyway. So Palestine exists in modern law by the SAME law that gave rise to the Israeli state. That's why the Occupation is ILLEGAL- just in case nobody has noticed.

The legal borders of Israel and Palestine remain today as described by Resolution 181- and ' facts on the ground ' have no legal standing. Jerusalem is International Territory and illegally occupied. All ' Israeli Law ' there has been declared void.

As for the Palestinian government- the Palestine-wide elections of 2006 returned Hamas with an overwhelming majority. It was conniving between the US, Israel and Fatah which attempted a coup and caused the rift between Gaza and the West Bank. Abbas has always been a puppet and his tenure ended years ago. For you to attempt to use that rift as a condemnation of Palestinians- and not the US/Israel- is thoroughly contemptible. There have been no more recent elections because it's well know that Hamas would walk it again. If an election is in the wind then the Israeli filth- with American collusion- will attempt to assassinate the Hamas candidates.

Like the Ukrainian resistance, the Palestinians are fighting to regain their occupied territory. The US rewards Ukraine while condemning Palestine. That's because the US government is rotten with Zionists. Time for change.

No, it is not. Resolution 181 just says it should be an independent country, with territory, not that it is. Even if it did say it was an independent country, that would not change the facts on the ground, that it is not.

At best, Palestine has been a government-in-exile for most of the last 75 years, but even that is an exaggeration. It is more like a theoretical government-in-exile. Right now it is a sub country sovereign government, like the Native American reservations. It simply is not a country on the ground.

Countries exist because of the laws they make for themselves, not because of the laws that others make, so no. More importantly, countries exist de facto because they have territory. At best Palestine exists de jour, but not de facto. Which is to say it does not exist.

Think about this, how many other countries in the UN have no territory? Kuwait briefly had no territory, but the territory was returned in less than a year. Palestine has had no sovereign territory forever.

The facts on the ground are the main problem with getting Palestine recognized.

And the Palestinian governments (yes, it has to be pluralized) are not helping change the facts on the ground.

The ' facts on the ground' , as I said, have no legal basis. ALL of the settlements are illegal.
You're also wrong about Palestine as a country. It is- and it has borders as ascribed by Resolution 181. What it NEEDS is statehood- and that requires recognition without opposition by the Zionism-permeated United States. One hundred and thirty eight countries ALREADY recognize the Palestinian state on the pre-1967 borders. Full recognition requires the US to drop its objections- objections that have absolutely no moral foundation and which run contrary to the law. The Palestinians are a nation with a country and they have United Nations Observer Statehood. They just require a moral American government for full recognition.

Maybe you're simply not paying attention. Palestine has legal borders as proscribed by UNGAR 181. If you deny that then you must also deny that Israel has legal borders as proscribed by UNGAR 181. You might WANT your cake and eat it- but you ain't going to get it.

ISRAEL’S DECLARATION OF SOVEREIGNTY: Supersedes all prior promises, declarations, resolutions. On the 14th May 1948, Israel became a Sovereign State within the borders proposed by UNGA Res 181. They were accepted by the Peoples Council, in order that the new Jewish State be recognized as a Sovereign State. Resolution 181 is enshrined in the Declaration of a Jewish State.

Israel has never legally annexed ANY territory outside of it’s Sovereign territory.

So let's end the nonsense about there being no Palestinian nation , no Palestinian country, no Palestinian state and that the Zionists can keep any territory that they choose to illegally squat upon.

Israel is a legally-recognized entity, unfortunately, but its borders are set in law according to its UN recognition- and nobody else's, not even El Trumpo or the horse he rode in on.
