While the Pillsbury Dough Boy does his best to spin out of this latest embarrassment for the administration, the entire incident is yet another reminder of the incompetence found in the Oval Office.
On Monday, Andrew Breitbart ran a video clip on his website, where Ms. Sherrod was giving a speech to the NAACP. She was telling the story of how she had a 'racist' attitude toward white farmers in 1986, when she worked for a non-profit organization, and not the government. The point of her confession, was to emphasize how she had changed, and no longer used race as her guide. It was a story of redemption, and what Breitbart was pointing out, was the response of the NAACP audience, who actually APPLAUDED when she said she had not done everything she could for the white farmer. This indicated the clearly racist attitude of the NAACP, not Shirley Sherrod.
On Tuesday, she was forced to resign by the administration. She was told it was because "you're going to be on Glenn Beck tonight!" Clearly, the administration thought the focus was going to be her "racism" but this was never indicated by Beck or anyone else on the right. In fact, Beck went on to air a program (without Sherrod), where he actually DEFENDED the woman, and demanded she be given her job back. Later, Charles Krauthammer would also lament the same sentiments as Beck, that she was unfairly judged by the administration.
I am still trying to figure out how the administration can justify a policy of not prosecuting blacks, endorsing racist groups like the Black Panthers and ACORN, but they are so hypersensitive to an agriculture department director's admission of racism 25 years ago, to which she has repented. It doesn't comport with logic. Unless you want to believe Andrew Breitbart has the ability to sway the administration's actions, and that is pretty damn scary, if you think about it. I think there is more to this, something doesn't smell right about it.
Sherrod's comments, taken in context, are completely in line with the message this administration ran on and was elected to power with. She basically said she converted from being a racist to being a Marxist, which is pretty much what Obama has said himself. It's not about race... black and white... it's about "the haves" and "have nots" ...that's what she said, and that is what Obama signaled as he ran for president. Her comments warranted a cabinet position, a promotion, recognition from this administration, not the demand that she pull over to the side of the road and resign.
Today, we are hearing Gibbs 'excuse' the hasty decision to fire her, stating that "all the facts were not known" ....but the NAACP had the full tape, and the media outlets certainly were able to piece together what actually happened, so the 'excuse' just doesn't wash. Now the spin is, the White House was "snookered" by Breitbart and Fox News! Rather than take responsibility for what was obviously a knee-jerk overreaction, they are going to lay the onus on the right. Typical of this arrogant administration who can't seem to accept blame for the simplest of things.
