The Russians have to take Kyiv

They really dont. If you follow the news there are already moves to set up the "peoples Republic of Kherson" id expect that to be a country consisting of the occupied areas from Kherson, to Melitopol to beridiansk.

If you planned to take the entirety of Ukraine there would be no point to setting up these governments.

If you panned to slice chunks out of Ukraine then there is.

Putin is looking for a 'buffer zone'.

rump states loyal to Moscow to undermine Kyiv? makes sense

I think Putin wants the east and south of Ukraine. The parts that touch Russia and the Black Sea. Kyiv is more 'symbolic' in my opinion. A secondary consideration.
fracture the country. put it back together with rump governments .
Then the resistance from the old government sympathizers

It depends on what the people do - they might sue for peace or pull an Afghanistan..dont know

The Afghans had US support.

Whut no. Who cares about Kiev. Kiev like Washington DC may look like its a wealthy area but it really produces nothing but government. It just so happens that the highest salaries of government is there. IMO Russia wants the areas that are rich in oil and natural gas.

read what i posted "to undermine" as in undermine their authority/reach if I wasnt clear.

There is also geography - anything west of the Dnieper is an impossible get.

by "rump states" i also mean autonomous pro-Russian mayors etc.

So the Idea isn't some grand decapitation of Kyiv and setting up a government there to defend;
it's grabbing chunks and marginalizing Kyiv
Not that he wont pulverize Kyiv, but he can simply isolate it by cutting off the south
I think he's been going after airports in the west

And the farmland, brother Tsuke?

For centuries, Ukraine has been known as “the breadbasket of Europe.” This title is entirely accurate, given that Ukraine is home to around a quarter of the world’s super-fertile “chernozem” or “black soil.”

The untapped potential of Ukraine’s agricultural sector is staggering. The country boasts around 42 million hectares of agricultural land. At present, 32 million hectares are cultivated annually, representing an area larger than Italy. Given the size and fertility of the country’s farmland, together with the vast scope for increased harvests and greater efficiency through ongoing modernization, it is no exaggeration to state that Ukraine can feed the world.

Ukraine is already among the top three grain exporters and a world leader in areas such as soybeans and sunflower oil. Ukrainian agricultural exports enjoy a growing profile in key global markets like China, Egypt, India, Turkey, and across the European Union.

The countries of the Middle East represent a particularly promising focus for Ukrainian agricultural exporters.

Who cares about Kiev.

The people who live in Kyiv?

Kiev like Washington DC may look like its a wealthy area but it really produces nothing but government.

It is like DC, NYC, and Silicon Valley combined. It is not just government, but also industry, culture, and technology.

IMO Russia wants the areas that are rich in oil and natural gas.

That is partly because you cannot imagine an economy where human production is more important than natural resources. The amount of silicon in a $10,000 computer chip is literally a small fraction of a penny. All the gold in the world is unimportant compared to the economy of the world. But you see none of that.

Also because you do not realize that as long as the government of the Ukraine exists, there will be well organized resistance. If your Russian allies can destroy the government, there will be less organized resistance.
