The Russia Olympics: Gay Stuff Not Welcome

MOSCOW—Russia will enforce a new law cracking down on gay rights activism when it hosts international athletes and fans during the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, the country's sports minister said Thursday, appearing to contradict assurances to the contrary from the International Olympic Committee.

Russia's contentious law was signed by President Vladimir Putin in late June, imposing fines on individuals accused of spreading "propaganda of nontraditional sexual relations" to minors and even proposing penalties for those who express these views online or in the news media. Gay pride rallies also are banned.

"An athlete of nontraditional sexual orientation isn't banned from coming to Sochi," Vitaly Mutko said in an interview with R-Sport, the sports news wire of state news agency RIA Novosti. "But if he goes out into the streets and starts to propagandize, then of course he will be held accountable."

Mutko emphasized that the law wasn't designed to punish anyone for being gay or lesbian. But like the Russian lawmakers who authored the bill, Mutko said athletes would be punished only for propaganda, a word that remains ambiguous under the new law. "The corresponding law doesn't forbid non-traditional orientation, but other things: propaganda, involvement of minors and the youth."

I've read elsewhere the things such as gay people kissing, holding hands or otherwise showing affection fall within the scope of "propagandize" as do such things as simply displaying a rainbow. The angle the Russians put on it is that it isn't ban on gay people just doing gay stuff, which is nonsense. Now, I'm not typically one for boycotts, but that's fucked up and bullshit, yo.

Tough decisions. Certainly Jesse Owens performing so well at the German Olympics really helped show the idiocy of Germany's "racial supremity" stuff.

But why give money to a country that is so anti gays/lesbians?

I didn't watch any of the Olympics when it was held in China because of their human rights policies. I didn't write any sponsors or anything, just chose not to watch it. Turns out I didn't miss it much; coverage is always so lousy of the sporting events anyway.

Maybe the American delegation should carry the rainbow flag along with the US flag during the opening ceremonies! And they should ALL declare themselves gay/lesbian, no matter what their orientation really is!

The Olympics cost way more money than pretty much anything. Why Russia would even WANT to host them again is beyond me.

Does Russia have a right to declare male/female relationships as traditional?
Does Russia have a right to declare non-traditional relationships must abide by an extra set of rules?

Who cares? The international community can (and should) tell Russia to go screw if it wants to do this type of shit.

Replace the word "gay" with "black"; would the US protest? I would hope so. I'm cool telling Russia to go screw itself if it continues to hate on gays.

I'd rather all competitors, gay and straight, boycott the Olympics.


That said, this whole thing is fucking hilarious.

What are they going to do? Show each competitor a nekkid pic of Pootin and kick him out of the country if he gets a boner?



Here's an even better idea. Have this picture on all the uniforms.
