If I had zero care about the rights of others I would be a hypocrite. Basically the assumption that it is "fear" that makes me avoid endorsing such a rigid set of laws with no checks and balances is a poor assumption indeed.
Even people forced to live under Sharia Law have rights that Sharia Law doesn't necessarily afford them, and they deserve equal justice and due process as well as full protections due all individuals for their personal rights. If we took this same stance for every set of "personal rules" set aside that people "freely choose" to follow then we would have no recourse to stop uber-Mormons from marrying six year olds, anarchists could create "enclaves" where might makes right can take precedence... etc. Can you imagine being the child born into such a group? I can't. But I do know that you would think it was "normal" and would work to "protect" those who were violating your rights.
Equal justice isn't just a couple of words, it's a basic precept on which the nation was founded.
