The question no one dares to ask:

What if we are wrong about Syria?

We watched and cheered Egypt at the overthrow of Mubarrak. Now there is an Islamist regime and whether it is a friendly Islamist regime or not the situation might be very temporary. The intention is to introduce Sharia law in Egypt and, it goes without saying, that whatever words they use, they will see the west as their enemy in time.

Is that what we wanted when we cheered the rebels on?

The same thing happened in Libya. We debated the wisdom of involvement and came down on the side of the rebels. Those rebels are now an Islamist leaning government. Islamists want a world of Islam. History shows Islam to position itself as an enemy of the west.

Note: Islamists do NOT include all Muslims the majority of whom are peaceable and, within, certain parameters, assimilate into their adoptive society.

Now cast your mind back to N. Ireland. Remember how Americans were played for fools by the IRA who appealed to the image of the poor downtrodden, exploited citizens. Memories of the potato famine to the strains of Danny Boy? Now you know, I hope, that that little tale was almost totally false. Their words, used for war at home, played the gullible in America as simply as Menuhin played his fiddle.

So Syria. Those poor rebels. Those poor people being shot and bombed by that evil president supported by the nasty Russians and the evil Chinese.

I'll ask again. What if we are wrong? What if, in a years time, in five or ten years time, we are faced not with an Arab spring but with an Islamist assault from all corners of the mediteranean? What if we discover that the propaganda we are fed daily is exactly that. What if our leaders, so intent on creating an outside enemy to take the heat off the enemy within, have got it wrong?

Mubarrak, Ghaddaffi, Assad may not have been the sort of people you took home to tea but for decades they kept the lid on a pot that might well contain a bubbling, toxic mix that proves impossible to live with in the future.

Now I'll sit back and wait for the experts to extract their little factlets and by slow demolition prove me wrong. That's OK. It's tea time anyway.

My attitude is that the West is better off with the likes of Saddam, Mubarrak, and Assad in power. Ghaddaffi, at least, had a history of supporting terrorism against the West.

Ghaddaffi supplied the IRA with Semtex and weapons, they still don't know the full extent of his shipments. Only two were intercepted. As for Tunisia, Egypt and Syria there was and isn't much that the West could do to change the course of events except for military intervention, which would have been crazy. I am optimistic about Libya, they have been locked into a dictatorship for so long that I doubt they will accept an Islamic theocracy.

Uhm... this is what SOME people have been telling you since before 9/11. You hooted us down and told us we were wrong, and the Arab Spring was a "GOOD" thing! I didn't cheer over Egypt, I warned it would be trouble ahead, and I was again hooted down as some idiot who just wanted to support Mubarak because that's who Republicans supported. I didn't cheer for Libya, again, I warned of the dangers posed by radical Islamic elements, I was hooted down as a warmonger and hater of brown people. We can't even mention Iran without being hooted down, told we're wrong and full of hate for brown people.

It's great that you are now beginning to ponder "what if we're wrong?" But you should have been doing that 10 years ago!

I want you to go to Google and type in: Islamic Caliphate. See what you find!

when a people fight back against a government that is keeping them for freedom of choice I will cheer.

Freedom is what will save the world.

None of these countries can get anywhere in this world without the internet.

Trust the minds of human beings to being able to decide for themselves how they will live.

The youth will take them down if they try to imprison them in a world of hate.

That is what has happened already to these countries.

So when you say 'you' you actually mean some people you cannot remember. OK. I get it.
And you really do not get my point at all do you. Anyway, I guess you have only just got up and the hangover has not dissipated yet so I excuse you.

We are predisposed to support the underdog and to assume that the rebels are those underdogs. I am questioning that predisposition.

Freedom is what will save the world.

What a profoundly stupid thing to say for someone opposed to any and all US intervention.

Don't get me wrong, I agree with this 110%, but I don't think these places can achieve freedom unless someone helps them overthrow the masters.

We're not seeing "freedom" with this Arab Spring, we're seeing Islamic fanaticism sweep in and fill the void. While YOU cheer them on!

Let them have the islamist. To use an analogy. It's like when we let the rednecks over here have George W. Bush. He was such a collosal fuck up that no one really listens to ignorant rednecks anymore. Same thing with the Islamist. Within a year their government will be in shambles and no one will want anything to do with the Islamist so they'll vote them out.

If the underdog is a people seeking to be free of Oppressive government then its the right way to see it

Did you do as I suggested and Google "Islamic Caliphate?"

some people dont really believe in the power of freedom and the human brain

I fully believe in freedom and the power of the human brain. It doesn't do much good to have a brain full of ideas about freedom, if it's splattered all over a wall somewhere after radical Muslims executed you. The whole point of the US going in to liberate Afghans and Iraqis, was so they could establish this all-powerful and wonderful freedom. You stood in the schoolhouse door on that, and refused to budge.

they will NOT be able to contain these people who just rose up and fought for their freedoms.

guess what they will get if they try to smother these people with a new form of government?

Their government will now FEAR the people as it should be

If the underdog is a people seeking to be free of Oppressive government then its the right way to see it

If. However if they are simply a different form of oppression and danger then it is the wrong way to see it.
My contention is that we 'know' only what we are told and we are 'told' by those with their own agenda. Not every dictatorship is oppressive, not every revolution is by the oppressed. That story book was written for the gullible.
Assad may be the worst human being ever to have lived, on the other hand he might be the only person who can see the possible dangers in and Islamic takeover.
Like you, I do not know. And that is why I asked the question.

That would be the best scenario by far...but how often do we get second best, and when there are only two in contention second best is worst.

No. If you are so interested you google it.

This was YOUR topic, not mine. IF you want to understand what is going on, you should look up "Islamic Caliphate" and do some research.

I would do this for you, but you believe I am a hack who just loves Bush, hates brown people, and is incapable of telling the truth. It will be much more effective if you do the research yourself, and discover this on your own. What you're going to find, will amaze you, and it dovetails nicely with your OP.

Within a year their government will be in shambles and no one will want anything to do with the Islamist so they'll vote them out.

Yes, and I am SURE the radical regimes will abide by fair and accountable democratic elections!

You people amaze me sometimes... It's as if you think everyone on this planet wakes up to the same exact reality you have in America! That everyone has freedom and democracy, and whenever they don't like something, they can voice their displeasure at the ballot box. I would venture to say, most people living in this situation have never even seen a ballot box.
