ROME⁠—Pope Francis said that the “barking of NATO at the door of Russia” might have led to the invasion of Ukraine and that he didn't know whether other countries should supply Ukraine with more arms.

Pope Francis made his remarks in an interview with Italian daily Corriere Della Sera. He described Russia’s attitude to Ukraine as “an anger that I don’t know whether it was provoked but was perhaps facilitated” by the presence in nearby countries of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

If you go to the original Italian source that reports this, the pope says he doesn't know what caused the conflict. He is just wondering, guessing, speculating.

The Pope has a vested interest in presenting the Catholic church as neutral because he is intently seeking an audience with Putin to make the Christian case for peace.

People are "provoked" by thousands of things every day --> that does not give them the right to get into fights, wage war, or commit war crimes.

we are however past that - we are now at war with Russia herself
