Beaten to death? Maybe. But I think it deserves a thread: calling someone a racist, without evidence of real racism, is bad news. It’s weak, it’s lazy, it’s incendiary and it is the refuge of the intellectually bankrupt.
I had quite a few posters the past few days tell me to just get over it, to let the anger of those falsely using the term lash out unfettered, to let posters who racebait continue to racebait. I was told that I was self-absorbed and self-pitying for taking time to deny the charge. And let’s not make any mistake about this: it’s a serious accusation. It’s not calling someone an idiot, or a fool. If you believe racism is a serious issue, then you believe it’s a serious accusation. You can’t have it both ways.
I was told that I was a racist for respecting the verdict of the jurors in the GZ case. I was told I was a racist for finding some of the evidence ambiguous & inconclusive. I was told that I was a racist for denying that I was with passion – that if I wasn’t, the accusation wouldn’t bother me. I was told I was a racist for not agreeing with a crazy person.
Then, something very interesting happened. Former President & liberal icon Jimmy Carter agreed with me. He said the same thing I said. The logical conclusion? He must be a racist, too.
And this is when the baiters, the grenade throwers, the ones who so carelessly lob that term out to their political opponents – they scattered like cockroaches when the lights go on. One made a lame attempt to try to argue that Carter – Jimmy friggin’ Carter - is a man who generally tries to appease Republicans, and who doesn’t really speak his mind. But the rest split. It was like watching a computer overload when given two conflicting instructions.
It was a glorious thing to see such a high level of hypocrisy exposed. Those who use this term carelessly, recklessly & to only serve a political agenda are no better than the real racists, imo. They are just as divisive; just as worthy of condemnation.
