Here are the reasons why: When President Lincoln was POTUS who used slaves and others to support the Union Cause to liberate America from atrocities associated with the barbaric confederacy, in particular, it was his Union Army that included slaves and freedmen too that came to the rescue of civilization at some point to go forward and to the height of the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights laws, etc. of the U.S. This historical event resulted at giving all Americans and regardless of who they are federal rights to be accommodated and be liberated members of U.S. society:

What did President Lincoln accomplish?
Lincoln's legacy is based on his momentous achievements: he successfully waged a political struggle and civil war that preserved the Union, ended slavery, and created the possibility of civil and social freedom for African Americans.

What about President Reagan?

Unfortunately with Ronnie, the following represents his legacy:

Ronald Reagan's shameful legacy: Violence, the homeless, mental illness
As president and governor of California, the GOP icon led the worst policies on mental illness in generations

In November 1980, Republican Ronald Reagan overwhelmingly defeated Jimmy Carter, who received less than 42% of the popular vote, for president. Republicans took control of the Senate (53 to 46), the first time they had dominated either chamber since 1954. Although the House remained under Democratic control (243 to 192), their margin was actually much slimmer, because many southern “boll weevil” Democrats voted with the Republicans.

One month prior to the election, President Carter had signed the Mental Health Systems Act, which had proposed to continue the federal community mental health centers program, although with some additional state involvement. Consistent with the report of the Carter Commission, the act also included a provision for federal grants “for projects for the prevention of mental illness and the promotion of positive mental health,” an indication of how little learning had taken place among the Carter Commission members and professionals at NIMH. With President Reagan and the Republicans taking over, the Mental Health Systems Act was discarded before the ink had dried and the CMHC funds were simply block granted to the states. The CMHC program had not only died but been buried as well. An autopsy could have listed the cause of death as naiveté complicated by grandiosity."

Well at least he was instrumental in ending the Cold War IIRC.

I agree or was it First Lady Nancy Reagan that avoided nuclear engagements back in the early 1980's to which her husband President Reagan was suffering the ongoing effects of his Alzheimer's problem? Any good answers would be appreciated. Even though it was a terrifying time of that day, but life went on.

Well that's unproven.

I will let the facts speak for themselves as follows:

Nancy Reagan led a storied life in support of her husband

After his death, she devoted her time to cementing his place in history, helping the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Foundation in Simi Valley evolve from a monument to Reagan to a platform that launches rising Republican stars. She was always cast as a supporting actress in her Hollywood days, a role she carried for life.

"My job is being Mrs. Ronald Reagan," she once told the late 60 Minutes reporter and friend Mike Wallace. "It's not about my legacy."

In doing so, she not only defined his place in history, but hers.

"Nancy Reagan helped Ronald Reagan be a more effective president and more effective leader," said Lou Cannon, Reagan's biographer and Summerland resident. And, in his mind, her ability to make him a better president made her a great first lady."

Well you know the saying: “Behind every great man is a great woman.”

Regardless, here's Snopes' rating: https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/ronald-reagan-alzheimers-disease/

Well that's unproven.

Furthermore, Prove that is unproven. Yet consider the following details, and your stars are dimming away from what I formerly admired as to not be a star gazer to avoid being a fool:

First take: Nancy Reagan was a huge influence on her husband's presidency

Yet, in the later years that I covered the White House, I came to appreciate the enormous influence Nancy Reagan had on her husband's domestic and foreign policies to ensure a successful presidency. She was his only close confidant and friend, and his No. 1 adviser. In retrospect, I must say she served him — and the country— very well.

Do you know who he "successfully waged a political struggle" against? Democrats. Some things never change. Jackasses spread hate and discontent and elephants try to clean up behind them.

“I am not, nor ever have been, in favor of bringing about in any way the social and political equality of the white and black races . . . I am not now nor have ever been in favor of making voters or jurors of Negroes, nor of qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermarry with white people; and I will say in addition to this that there is a physical difference between the white and black races which I believe will forever forbid the two races from living together on terms of social and political equality. And inasmuch as they cannot so live, while they do remain together there must be a position of superior and inferior, and I as much as any other man am in favor of having the superior position assigned to the white race.” - Abraham Lincoln, 1858 debates with Senator Stephen Douglas

What about President Reagan?

During Reagan's presidency, the federal debt held by the public nearly tripled in nominal terms, from $738 billion to $2.1 trillion. This led to the U.S. moving from the world's largest international creditor to the world's largest debtor nation.

Regan's admin wrote books after his presidency, stating that Ronnie was being handled like a child due to inchoate Alzheimer's. The press conferences were very narrow in subject matter and he was carefully scripted. They dreaded that he would go off-topic because he could say anything. They all knew he had problems, but they were not going to let the people know.

How do you get through a day without seriously injuring yourself? You must have one exhausted caretaker or God just loves you so much.
