Op-ed: They block grocery stores, then build their own at four times the cost

Four times, or more, the cost per square foot to build...

Using eminent domain to seize land to build them...

Endless taxpayer subsidies to operate...

Mamdani's first store is running $30 million to open and it's in direct competition with several smaller grocery and convenience stores within a few blocks of it.

So, this store, operating with a massive taxpayer subsidy will directly compete with several private businesses right next to it who aren't subsidized. Can you say "bankruptcy?"

This is the insanity of Socialism on full display. Slower, lousier, costlier...

Ever shop at the commissary?

Ever shop at the commissary?
Yes. The staples and basic groceries are usually about 5% cheaper than in private groceries. There are some bargains. "Luxury" items and add ons, like condiments sell for about the same price. Some meat is cheaper but other cuts cost just as much. The commissary system runs off their own profits not taxpayer money. In many locations, they have a captive audience and are the only store in town so-to-speak.

Food deserts are a problem in Harlem. Capitalist refuse to build there. The city had to do something.

Maybe start with cleaning up crime and homelessness? Maybe crack down on shoplifters? Most food deserts in larger cities aren't because there isn't a customer base. They are caused because companies can't afford to operate in a high crime, high retail loss area.

Government is best decided at the local level where people get to vote on a new direction. The pentagon doesn't allow us to vote on how many military bases they build or where they build them. If you don't live in NYC, all you can do is complain.

Block grocery stores? Where and when did they do that?
Government, particularly in blue states, does this by slapping onerous permitting and zoning regulations on stores, restricting them from aggressively handing shoplifting, and in general simply raising the cost of just putting the store in place and operating it.

San Francisco has seen a number of grocery stores close simply because they could no longer operate with SF's government on their neck.

So nothing in NYC? Just as I thought.
