Tom...that is exactly what we did 228 years ago. We became a Federation of Sovereign States. That is what the United States (emphasis added) is to this day.

What you're rebelling at is the ideal of the EU having a strong central government which was the same short sighted error we made with our Articles of Confederation after we gained independence. It left us as 13 very week national entities with no strong central authority and weak economic and political ties. It was a catastrophe and we quickly shed it.

I am sorry but there is no comparison, I would have thought you at least would know that. We want the single market but not the rest of the bullshit. I frankly despair at just how little Americans understand how Europe and the EU works, or doesn't for the most part. We have had millions of Eastern Europeans come here in the last 10 years and because of the free movement rules there's fuck all we can do about it. Thanks to that, places like Romania and Bulgaria have just opened up their jails and now all the pimps, rapists, murderers and thieves have ended up over here. No competent organisation would have let Greece anywhere near the Eurozone, or indeed any of the other PIIGS nations come to that. If the UK had listened to all the "great and good" then we'd have been stuck in the effing Euro as well. Fortunately Gordon Brown told that corrupt cunt Blair to go take a hike otherwise we would have been screwed as well. I was speaking to a really intelligent PhD student from Romania the other day and he said that his country is really nice now because all of the lowlife shit had left and ended up in Britain and Germany. I voted to stay in the EU forty years ago in 1975, there was absolutely no mention back then about signing up to a super state. We basically gave away our fishing rights to the Spanish, French and fuck knows who else, only to see our fishing industry virtually collapse due to the incompetence of the Common Fisheries policy. Would the US give away their fishing rights to Canada and Mexico, not in a million years.

OH Tom we've been dealing with that for centuries. We have had successive waves in our history of Western Europe, than Central Europe, then southern and Eastern Europe sending us the lowest wretched refuse of their societies then wa Es of Chinese and now masses of Mexicans and other Latinos.

Not only that but how do you think we feel about prima Donna Texans (Think French) and genetic defective I red Mississipians (think Serbia).

My point being Tom what the EU is going through is nothing new to the US. We went through this shit multiple time and still are but in the long run the common interest and common culture of Europe needs to unify to be competitive with large nations like the US, China, India, Russia, Brazil, etc.

To do that the EU will need to delegate certain powers to a central Authority. That or you could become our 51st State.

There is nothing to stop the UK forming its own rival to the EU including Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, South Africa, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and the other members of the Commonwealth. I don't know what kind of bullshit you are being fed over there but the UK will still be part of Europe and will have a trade agreement with the EU like, but much more advantageous, those of Switzerland, Norway and Iceland. We are more than happy to be in the Single Market but we don't want to be part of the USE. I bet you also didn't know that we are the second biggest net contributor to the EU budget, now did you?

Obama is only worried about his precious TTIP going down the Swanee and as far as I am concerned that's where it should go!! Oh and he can have his 25 DVDs back as well!!
