How ‘Owning the Libs’ Became the GOP’s Core Belief
The weird journey of a tongue-in-cheek catchphrase from conservative-mocking putdown to the defining tenet of the Republican Party’s way of life.

Conservatism is an intellectually devoid movement anyway, that elevates laziness and selfishness because it's easier than coming up with policies and ideas that can attract votes.

Name 1 Democrat policy that's good for all Americans.

That's not a Democrat policy.

LOL, of course it is. It was passed under a Democratic President by a Democratic Congress. The only party interested in dismantling it is Republicans. The ACA benefits all Americans. The American Recovery Act benefitted all Americans.

Republicans literally have no policy positions. You should just strategically withdraw.

^ Partly the reason in national elections they have not been able to consistently convince a majority-plurality of American voters of the superiority of their ideas since the mid to late 20th century.

The last time I actually saw message board conservatives passionately defending a policy was when they were hollering at me that invading Iraq was going to be an awesome idea and an excellent adventure.

I've seen them passionately defend tax cuts for the rich, and even after 40 years of trickle-down failure, their knee-jerk response to every crisis is to cut taxes for the rich and corporations.

Well, my post said rightwing message board posters. None of whom actually ever saw a benefit from tax cuts largely benefiting Kim Kardashian, ExxonMobil, or Warren Buffett.

So I am dubious that their defense of trickle down tax cuts was ever based on genuine passion, but more likely perceived by message board Deplorables as another way to own the libs.

Yeah, I tend to agree because there is no economic benefit to a Deplorable "very fine person" by cutting his boss' taxes.

The ACA rewards the same insurance companies as before liar!

Right...we wanted a Public Option or Medicare-for-All, but y'all weren't ready for either so we had to compromise with the ACA.

If you don't like the ACA, then you need to support M4A.

You are brand new to politics, eh?

Medicare, which you or your parents are consistently using, was the brainchild of LBJ, passed by a Democratic Congress, and opposed by rightwing hero Ronald Reagan

Wrong. It was the brainchild of Harry S. Truman, who Democrats these days would call a right wing fanatic.

"Johnson wanted to recognize Truman, who, in 1945, had become the first president to propose national health insurance, an initiative that was opposed at the time by Congress."

Truman was an alright president. Johnson was a piece of shit.

Yes it is and so is Social Security. So are min wage, unions, and many other programs that help the people in general. The Repubs work for the billionaires and are working for the plutocracy.

Republicans have not had a single successful domestic policy since Nixon.

Harry Truman was a Democrat and was FDR's Vice President.

He's not one of yours; he desegregated the military, so he's not endeared to Conservatives.

In fact, William F. Buckley and Irving Kristol routinely trashed Truman and called him an FDR socialist puppet, while buddying up to Joe McCarthy.

Yes, it is.

Social Security.

Medicaid.

Obamacare.

SNAP.

Pell Grants.

Civil Rights Act.

Fair Housing Act.

Voting Rights Act.

COVID recovery.

ARRA.

Civil Rights act?

Okay, so Kennedy proposed it. Democrats today would call Kennedy an Alt-Right maniac.

Well said. We can also add Social Security to that. Those currently employed may cry because money is deducted from their paychecks to fund it. But it's *still* a LOT cheaper than having mom and dad come live with you when they're elderly because they weren't able to save enough to retire on when they were raising you. Oh, and Medicare makes sure that you don't have to pay their doctor bills, either.
