You have the memory of a goldfish. During the LA Rodney King riots, Blacks tried to loot Asian businesses in places like Garden Grove. The Asians took to the rooftops of their businesses and simply shot any Black trying to break in and loot the place. The Vietnam boat refugees after our withdrawal from Vietnam did the same thing to Blacks in the Hunter's Point area of San Fran.

I guess some people just hate tradition.
Also, I grew up in a completely Italian-American environment--family, neighborhood, elementary school, market place--
and was totally comfortable with the lack of diversity.
If I craved it, I could just walk a few blocks or use a subway token.
As a teenager, I was a regular customer at a black neighborhood record shop.
[Ironic, for as much as I loved that classic r&b music, I hate hip hop today.]
I was also made to feel welcome at a ribs and wings restaurant where I was often the only white face.
African Americans were equally welcome at my favorite pizza and pasta joint, however.
I'm not anti-diversity.
I just need, even now, at my age,
to have the necessity of diversity explained to me.
From what's obvious without deep analysis, it mainly seems to undermine solidarity.
We definitely do need to find the benefits in diversity because we're unalterably a multi-cultural nation.
There's no avoiding that; but should we set policies as if we've already found them?

You miss one vital point: history has shown that unless the status quo is coerced in some form or another, it sees no reason to change.
Your experience was based on the racial sectional set up in major cities that was done on purpose, not by choice....that's why every major city has a "china town". The problems ensue when that dynamic is forced to change....here in New York it was historically known as the "white flight" to the suburbs. One of those developing suburban towns had a mandate to NOT sell housing to non-white folk (aka red-lining).
Red-lining cases are STILL annually showing up in state & federal courts. That mindset doesn't stop there. So yeah, diversity is needed.
