The Daily Injustice Report

Deputy Melissa Powers with the Monroe County FL Sheriff's Office was killed in a single vehicle automobile accident on U.S. 1.

She was en route to locate another deputy when the crash occurred.

She was transported to a local hospital where she succumbed to her injuries a short time later.

Deputy Powers is survived by her husband, son, daughter, and parents.

Road patrol Deputy Melissa Powers, 36, was driving north on U.S. 1 with her flashing emergency lights and siren on to check on an officer who could not be reached on his police radio. The accident occured about 10:20 p.m. at mile marker 101.8, according to the sheriff's office.

The roads were slick from a rainstorm when Powers lost control of her cruiser while trying to avoid another vehicle. Her car spun around and hit a parked tractor-trailer. When emergency workers arrived, they found Powers pinned inside her patrol car. She was extricated from the vehicle and taken to Mariners Hospital in Tavernier, where she was pronounced dead at 11:30 p.m.

The officer that Powers was looking for was fine. He had switched his radio to a different channel and was temporarily out of touch on the dispatch channel, according to the sheriff's office report.

just so we're clear, she didn't die while trying to protect the public. she died because of the incompetence of another officer not following policy.
