“Texas bill could require Ten Commandments in classrooms”

If you're going to post Christian ethics in the school house, the place to start is the Sermon on the Mount.

and yet, that's not the ethics that Jesus taught......interesting.....

But I really don't think MAGAs are comfortable with the Sermon on the Mount because of the message of nonviolence, pacifism, loving your enemies, not passing judgment on other people, and giving to the poor.

and yet, the message of the Sermon on the Mount was NOT here are the rules you must follow, but that no matter how hard you try you cannot attain reconciliation with God by trying to conform to rules.......

2 Tim 3:16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

Nope, doesn't explain the obsession. The rightwing obsession with the Hebrew Bible's Ten Commandments is so pervasive, it has been the subject of decades of court battles.

Meanwhile Rightwing evangelicals, conservative school boards, and MAGA legislators have been virtually silent on the Sermon on the Mount, which constitutes the touchstone of Christian ethics and is probably the most famous passage in the New Testament.

"The teachings of the Sermon on the Mount have been a key element of Christian ethics, and for centuries the sermon has acted as a fundamental recipe for the conduct of the followers of Jesus."

“A Texas Senate bill that would require displaying the Ten Commandments in public schools is renewing the debate on the separation of church and state.”

“The bill would require the Ten Commandments to be displayed in each classroom on a poster or frame that is at least 16 inches wide and 20 inches tall. These posters could be displayed in classrooms across Texas as soon as this fall if the bill is passed.”

“I think this would be a good, healthy step for Texas to bring back this tradition of recognizing America’s religious heritage. Senate bill 1515 restores a little bit of those liberties that were lost,” Texas Sen. Phil King (R-Weatherford), who introduced the bill, said.”

Always interesting how conservatives supposedly want less government but they also want the government to enforce their religious beliefs

Wonder how the Founding Fathers would view such given a large number of them were Deists

Unconstitutional!

We all know who you worship! And that is blasphemy! For Donald Trump is the ANTI-CHRIST!

The AntiChrist isn't a Political figure.

This isn't constitutional and no doubt will be challenged and shot down... unless they agree to post the rules of other religions as well, which of course they won't.

Do they really think that putting that stuff up is going to make perfect little citizens?

Actually that's exactly what they believe !That's the problem!

I doubt you do. You would not be so nasty if you really did.
How about the separation of church and state? Should we have basic Muslim teachings too? What about Hinduism? We could teach Confucius's sayings too?

The Schools could have the 10 commandments posted, but the schools would have to be built facing Mecca!????

"The Ten Commandments had no particular importance in Christian tradition until the 13th century, when they were incorporated into a manual of instruction for those coming to confess their sins"

The Ten Commandments wasn't even particularly important to Christianity for the majority of it's history.

For the most part, the Ten Commandments isn't even really a complete or comprehensive ethical code. Taken as a whole it is mostly a list of priestly and legal requirements of the religion of the ancient Israelites.

I've always thought the reason the rightwing evangelicals pretend the Sermon on the Mount doesn't exist is because there to much talk of being pacifist, being nonviolent, being non-judgmental, and to much about helping the poor

sure......if you are stupid enough to believe wikipedia.....I'll stick with what Christianity has taught me my entire life and let you sadgnostics shift for yourselves.......I have taught classes of ethics based on the foundation of the Ten Commandments........

I can totally believe you either ignore, or are unfamiliar with the touchstone of Christian ethics Jesus taught in the Sermon on the Mount.

Actually, a different version of the 10 Commandments posted in classrooms isn’t a bad idea. Couple things though.

The references to God as the only god, obeying the Sabbath and the idolatry shit gotta go. They are obvious violations of the Establishment Clause. The others? Good lessons to live by.

Respect your elders.
Don’t kill.
Don’t fuck your best friend’s wife. (Probably better wording needed, but you catch the drift)
Don’t lie.
Don’t steal.
Don’t be jealous.

People, drop the God stuff and the 10 Commandments are good rules to live by. FOR ALL OF US.

If you are a God person, great. Keep those parts for yourself, but don’t insist on your god for everyone.

Pretty simple. Everybody wins.

None of it belongs in Public schools!

I didn't say it did.

My theory is that the rightwing evangelicals's obsession with the Hebrew Bible's Ten Commandments is they are uncomfortable with the messages of universal love, pacifism, charity, and nonjudgmentalism in the New Testament's Sermon on the Mount.

"The Sermon on the Mount was addressed to disciples and a large crowd of listeners to guide them in a life of discipline based on a new law of love, even to enemies, as opposed to the old law of retribution."

I'm on record favoring humane euthanasia over execution.
In this case, however,
anybody who votes for putting the ten commandments in public school classrooms
deserves to be impaled on a stake.

No hyperbole. I'm serious about this. That's how much I hate fucking theocrats.
