Well said. Thats where I'm coming from. There's a bigger game here at play than just short term partisan politics and in the big picture he wants to influence what he can.

I have a friend who's a republican and was on this same economic advisory board for Obama. He did it because it was good for business and to have a voice. Sitting on the sidelines would accomplish nothing.

I like to imagine Musk as one of those eccentrics, to whom everyday life and mannerisms make no sense. Kind of annoying to be around, but, doing great things, nonetheless.

I don't think you're far off in what you envision. His recent biography was excellent. He was bullied as a kid but clearly has this amazing mind. He thinks on a different level than the rest of us.
