I work with my dog all the time. However, he's not self-aware even when he learns a new trick or doesn't like doing certain things. It's all a matter of conditioning because...wait for it....he's not self-aware. A dog can reason, but that's not the same.

Example, the old Dog, a chain, a tree and a bowl of water test as pictured below. Some dogs are smarter than others and can reason out the problem quicker than others. Some are so stupid or emotionally wrought that they spin themselves around the tree until they choke. Some can be trained to learn the solution, some aren't as trainable. None of them are self-aware.
