Self-awareness is thinking "What will I have for dinner?" not "hungry. find food." A dog does not think about that asshole dog, Bob, down the street who is always shitting on his master's lawn. A dog does immediately react to the sight of Bob with anger.
A dog is pure zen. It lives each moment to moment but it's not self-aware. It simply lives the moment. If it's hungry it wants to eat. If cold it wants to be warm. It doesn't plan for winter or summer.
Yet a dog learns. It can learn about things like snow, who it's owner is, it's own name, it's favorite food, etc. A dog has no religion. It is not a Buddhist.
