Ted Cruz Tells Reporters "I'm a Christian First, American Second"

Imagine if Keith Ellison were running for president and said this about Islam, his religion.

"According to presidential candidate and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, there's one thing that more important to him than the country he's running to lead: his God.

In a remarkable exchange in New Hampshire, Politico reports, Cruz told reporters "I'm a Christian first, American second, conservative third and Republican fourth." "I'll tell ya, there are a whole lot of people in this country that feel exactly the same way," he added.

By proclaiming himself a Christian first and an American second, Cruz is professing higher loyalties than the United States — odd for a candidate who has repeatedly accused Muslims of doing much the same thing.

Cruz has avoided some of the most hot-headed Islamophobic rhetoric to come out of fellow candidates, such as Trump. But he's been careful to frame Islam as an existential threat to the Western world, and Muslims as of mixed loyalty and a pool of potential terrorists...

With anti-Muslim sentiment in the country at disturbing highs, as well as anti-Muslim hate crimes on the rise, it's hard to imagine a prominent follower of that faith proclaiming themselves a Muslim first and and American second without being labeled an extremist and third columnist. It's only due to the enormous privilege Christians in the U.S. have historically enjoyed, as well as Christianity's major (if waning) influence on partisan politics, that Cruz will likely escape similar accusations.

More generally, the remark also indicates that Cruz has mostly given up the pretense of considering his non-Christian fellow citizens equal partners in the American project. That might make sense for his campaign, which needs evangelicals to beat Trump. But it's going to make life harder for him in a theoretical general election campaign, where Cruz will have to explain why his faith is more important to him than many of the Americans who he will need to vote him into office."

Seems to me everyone would say that very same thing.....their God comes before everything else.....

and you seem surprised or even offended by that.....

How many Christians have died at the hands of ISIS and their ilk, rather than convert to Muslim.

I wonder what Obama would say if ask that question.

His supporters will like it, not so sure about the rest of the republicans.

Why is that ? I your crowd that likes to claim that Republicans and the Evangelicals are two peas in a pod.....

Did you change your mind that Conservatives "cling to their God and their guns" ?

How many others did say it? Maybe you think the topic of separation of church and state won't come up but I think there are people who will consider it when they're weighing the candidates.

And stop projecting that I'm "offended" by his comments. The more controversial they are the better I like him.

And as far as ISIS and their ilk, we are not fighting them in this country and American Muslims aren't killing people for not converting. That's a diversion. Your ilk still considers Obama a Muslim no matter how many times he's talked about his Christian faith.

Not everyone is a religious fundamentalist you fucking moron.
That is the problem with you rightard idiots; you really believe you are the majority.
Clue: you are a rather minor very insignificant minority.
So much so in fact that your votes can be entirely ignored by the winning party.

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;"......why would this come up, its pretty much settled law for over
225 years or so....
so you're not offended but just think is controversial ?....Nah...I think you're a little offended....

We ARE fighting ISIS or their ilk in this country, thats reality....thats why we have Homeland Security, the TSA, vetting of immigrants, etc.....

I agree that some people still consider Obama a Muslim or at least a Muslim sympathizer....but the question I put up was "what would be say comes first, his God of his country"....
so your claim is the diversion.

How many others would say it....I'd venture a very large majority of believers would agree with Cruz.

As a matter of fact....what would YOU say, Ms. Catholic, comes first to you ? Your God or your country ?

Did I say everyone is a religious fundamentalist, you fucking moron.? No, I didn't.

No one claimed the right wing is in the majority, fact is, neither is the left wing.

Christians are in the majority and along with the Jewish and Muslim citizens, BELIEVERS are in the majority....so learn to read before you post.

We are not fighting ISIS in this country. That's only going on underneath your tinfoil hat.

Other people who agree with Cruz aren't running for public office.

Every person who lives in the US is not a Christian. I don't know that the Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, agnostics, atheists etc. who do live here are talking about putting God before country and those people make up the electorate also.

I'm not afraid to name my emotions regarding any topic. You can stop pretending you can read my mind.

I just think he needs to remember that a president has to represent every religion (or lack of religion) in the country and not single out one in particular.

How's school going, Norah?

I agree but people always say they want honest politicians and so you can't fault him for being honest. I wouldn't lie about that sort of thing either. School is going well so far. I'm most likely going to look into transferring after this semester ends though. Not because I don't like my school but it's just really expensive and I'm also looking at some better programs for my major at a couple other schools that may have better opportunity. We'll see though.

You're getting as bad as your bff Rune.....

I did not say Every person who lives in the US is a Christian, I said Christians are the Majority.....and added to the other believers and their GODS, whatever religion, believers make the majority of the population.

I did say just about every BELIEVER, Christian, Muslim, Jews, whatever would probably put their God before country....my opinion....unless they really aren't believers....
You must not agree with my opinion, and thats cool....I'm no expert on the human mind.

People put their God above their very own lives, why wouldn't they put it above their country...

Its obvious that atheists and agnostics wouldn't, they are not believers..they have no GOD to put first.

For the record....I'm not saying Cruz is right or wrong or that anyone that agrees or disagrees with him is right or wrong....I'm just giving you my opinion on what I think
believers in a God would say....

I don't believe this country has ever elected an atheist to the office of president so it seems it shouldn't matter in the least....and only 3 were " religiously unaffiliated" .....One was Catholic and rest were Protestant Christians.

Carter was a "born again" christian, famous for being a baptist Sunday School teacher (even after his term), . Prior to serving, Carter took a missionary journey in which he knocked on strangers doors and said, “I’m Jimmy Carter, a peanut farmer. Do you accept Jesus Christ as your personal savior?”, that I would guess is the what you refer to
as an Evangelical or a fundamentalist today, at least if you were refering to a Republican.....
