Tea party Rep. Trey Radel busted for cocaine possession

i wish I could get into politics so that when I am caught with hookers and blow I'll just be like "I have nothing to apologize for."

I kept waiting for the punch line, I am addicted to alcohol and the coke takes the edge off. Or I'm addicted to alcohol and I use the cocaine so I can drink more. But he never gave us the punch line. He just said I make bad choices when I drink. Who says cocaine is a bad choice?

He's like that crack-smoking mayor up in Toronto who won't resign no matter what.

Oops. One of those law and order types caught with his hand in the cookie jar. :whoa:

"U.S. Rep. Trey Radel, the tea party freshman Republican from Fort Myers, was arrested Oct. 29 for cocaine possession in Washington D.C, Politico reported. Radel, who faces a maximum of 180 days in jail and a fine of up to $1,000, was charged Tuesday in D.C. Superior Court with misdemeanor cocaine possession and is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday.

“I'm profoundly sorry to let down my family, particularly my wife and son, and the people of Southwest Florida," the 37-year-old Republican, whose legal name is Henry Jude Radel III, said in a statement. "I struggle with the disease of alcoholism, and this led to an extremely irresponsible choice. As the father of a young son and a husband to a loving wife, I need to get help so I can be a better man for both of them.”

If Radel had been arrested in his home state for cocaine possession, he would have faced far more-serious consequences than in Washington. The crime is a felony in Florida, where Radel would have lost his voting and other civil rights had he been convicted in state court.
Another contrast between DC and Florida: If the congressman had been a state worker, he would face termination under Gov. Rick Scott, who wants to drug test state employees.

Apparently Representative Radel has spoken with the Republican Party Apparatchiks and has been forced into a re-education camp to learn how to drink to excess and snort cocaine without getting apprehended by the local Washington D.C. authorities!

Florida Congressman in Cocaine Case Will Take a Leave of Absence
By MICHAEL S. SCHMIDT

WASHINGTON — Representative Trey Radel, Republican of Florida, announced late Wednesday that he would take a leave of absence from office after pleading guilty earlier in the day to a misdemeanor charge stemming from his purchase of cocaine here last month. He was sentenced to one year of probation.

Mr. Radel said his “team” in Washington and in his southwest Florida district would take of his congressional business while he received what he called “intensive in-patient treatment.”

“I want to be a better man for southwest Florida,” Mr. Radel said in a 10:30 p.m. news conference in Florida. He added that he would donate his salary to charity while he was away.

According to documents released by prosecutors, the federal authorities learned this fall that Mr. Radel, a freshman legislator, had bought cocaine on several occasions for his own use in Washington and had sometimes shared it with others.

As part of a sting operation last month, an undercover police officer and an associate of Mr. Radel’s met him at a restaurant near Dupont Circle, and Mr. Radel invited them back to his apartment to use cocaine. After they declined, the officer told Mr. Radel that he had cocaine to sell.

Mr. Radel said he was interested, and after some negotiating, Mr. Radel agreed to buy 3.5 grams for $250. They went outside, Mr. Radel gave the officer the money, and they got into a car where the officer gave him the cocaine.

When Mr. Radel got out of the car, he was approached by federal agents, and he dropped the cocaine on the street.

Mr. Radel agreed to cooperate with the authorities, meeting with them in his apartment, where he admitted making the purchase and gave them the cocaine he had in his apartment.

Mr. Radel, 37, is a former Florida television reporter and a former conservative radio talk show host. He was elected to the House, his first public office, last year with 62 percent of the vote. His seat was previously held by Connie Mack, also a Republican.

In a statement, the authorities said that the arrest of Mr. Radel was part of a larger investigation into cocaine trafficking in the Washington area.
